0 Miles Per Hour - Sound In The Signals Interview

📸 Hannah Howells

I recently had the opportunity to interview 0 Miles Per Hour. We discussed writing and recording their new EP, ‘Shell’, lyrical inspiration, collaborating with Armageddon Records, Florida’s music scene, and more. Check it out below.

First, thanks for the interview.

Of course! Thank you for asking us!

You recently released your new EP ‘Shell’. Can you tell me about writing and recording the EP?

Sure, Shell is really just a collection of songs we had written in the past 2 years. We had been playing them at shows for a really long time and decided to hone in on them to make up our first real EP. The title track “Shell” and the song “In My Name” were actually written in the studio though and were kind of meant to bring a different energy that we thought would round out the project.

We recorded the project in Murray Hill, Jacksonville with our friend Drew Portalatin over the course of about a week in March 2024. He definitely played a pretty big role in all the songs, whether that be with pushing us to be better singers or writing catchier guitar parts. We had a lot of fun and it was cool to be so central to an area we all love.

Do you have a favorite lyrical or musical moment from the EP? Why?

I think collectively one of our favorite moments instrumentally is the beginning of the song “Losing Streak”, it’s a pretty basic diet hardcore type riff, but we just think it’s a pretty cool opener to set the tone for the rest of the EP.

Lyrically, I can also say collectively we are most proud of the title track “Shell”. It was probably the most meaningful and collaborative song we’ve done in terms of lyrical content and we’re really proud of it.

Have you been pleased with the response it’s received so far? How does it feel to have it out?

We are super pleased with it! It’s been really cool to get a little bit of recognition from people in bands and scenes that we admire so much. For a while we were mostly perceived as a straight up indie band and I think the reception to these songs is definitely a good starting point to changing that! It feels awesome to have them out, partly because we’ve been sitting on them for so long and are ready to shift our focus to the next stage of the band.

I really like “Flowers”. At what point in the writing process for the EP was that song written specifically? Can you tell us more about the meaning and/or inspiration for the lyrics?

Flowers is actually the oldest song on the EP! We wrote it probably when we were about 18, and we’re all 21-22 now. The song is basically just a comparison of the similarities with how relations grow and die over time the same as plants.

You put the EP out on Armageddon Records. How did you end up working with them for this EP?

Arma is a label that we all really respect, especially in terms of making an effort to represent Florida. The founder Josh is pretty closely involved with some super influential and important bands right now, to us and the FL scene. They usually deal in mostly Hardcore, but we were lucky enough for Josh to really like the songs and go out on a limb for us. Super stoked and grateful to be a part of something so cool alongside so many bands we respect like Miracle, Remote Control, Blockade, Concealer., and Painful Choice.

Thanks for taking the time to answer the questions. Do you have anything else that you would like to add?

Nope! Thanks for reaching out to us to hear about the EP, anyone reading listen to “Shell” if you’d like!
