Cheers For Nothing - Sound In The Signals Interview

I recently had the opportunity to interview Cheers For Nothing. We discussed how the pandemic was a reset for them, writing and recording their debut EP, embracing the highs and lows in everyday life, what they hope fans take away from the EP, and more. Check it out below.

First, thanks for the interview.

Thank YOU for having us.

Your band was originally formed by high school friends and reunited during the pandemic. What made that time feel right for pursuing music and how has that evolved over the past few years?

The pandemic was an unexpected reset for us. With so much free time, we naturally gravitated back to making music. It started as jamming for fun, but before we knew it, we had enough material for an EP! Coming back after the hiatus, we noticed how much our music tastes had evolved. The time apart brought in different influences, which gave us the opportunity to experiment with our sound. It’s been an exciting process, and we’re still discovering what our “color” is as a band.

You recently released your debut EP, ‘New Highs, Same Lows’. How does it feel to release it and what can fans expect?

We’ve been working on this EP since the pandemic, so releasing it feels like finally taking the most satisfying dump after holding it in for too long. Creating an EP has always been a dream of ours, and now that it’s actually happening, it feels a bit surreal. Fans can expect a nostalgic sound with a modern twist.

Can you tell us more about the writing and recording process?

Since the pandemic, our vocalist/guitarist built out his own home studio, which is where we recorded the entire EP. Once we finished tracking, we had our songs mixed and mastered by Joey Burcham (Roo Studios). A lot of the arrangements came together during our jam sessions, so the songs were written with live performance in mind. Since we all work 9-5, we had to do a lot of remote collaboration. Recording ideas at home, sharing tracks with each other, and giving feedback. It was pretty difficult, but it worked out in the end and helped us create something we’re really proud of.

The EP explores contrasts in life, growth, change, and the challenges people face. Can you tell us more about how you’ve managed to embrace the highs and lows in everyday life and how they helped shape you as musicians?

As a band, we had to balance stability and passion, juggling full-time jobs while creating music. It hasn’t been easy, but the challenges have pushed us to grow, both personally and as musicians. The struggles made the highs, like finishing this EP, feel that much more rewarding. This journey taught us that life’s contrasts aren’t just inevitable, they’re what make it meaningful.

Along the lines of self-discovery, what do you hope fans take away from those relatable moments in your songs?

We hope fans see themselves in our songs and feel a sense of connection. Life’s struggles are something we all experience, but the way we navigate them is unique to each of us. Tracks like “All Season” capture those relatable moments, like regret and self-discovery, and show that it’s okay to feel lost sometimes. We want listeners to feel seen and know that they’re not alone in their journey.

Do you have plans for a tour or do you have any shows coming up soon?

We don’t have any immediate plans for touring, but we want to play a few shows this year! We plan on playing at Tamper Room, in Fremont, around spring time!

Thanks for taking the time to answer the questions. Do you have anything else you want to add?

We just want to thank everyone who took the time to check us out! With so much music out there, it means the world to us that there’s people out there connecting with our music. We put a lot of love and effort into this EP, and we hope that comes through in the sound. This is just the beginning for us. We’re already working on new songs and can’t wait to start playing live shows soon. Thanks for being part of the journey!
