Pursuit - Sound In The Signals Interview

📸 @step2vic

I recently had the opportunity to interview Pursuit. We discussed how they formed the band, musical influences, lyrical inspiration, their upcoming EP, the importance of physical releases, and more. Check it out below.

First, thanks for the interview.

Ayyyyyoohhhh

Can you tell me how you started the band for those who may be unfamiliar with it? How did you become interested in music?

Most of us were members of a prior band (Alumni) that we were in for almost 10 years, but a few of us wanted to try making more punk esque type music so we asked 2 of our buddies to start Pursuit. We all were extensively involved in the local scene to begin with and many of us are in several local bands outside of Pursuit.

You’ve said your band is for fans of The Movielife, Saves The Day, Bayside, and Koyo. What about those bands inspired or influenced the sound of your band?

It was what we grew up listening to. We saw newer bands such as Stand Still and Koyo creating a similar sound to the music we liked so we wanted to take our own crack at it.

You recently released your debut single “SHINTO FOOT”. I think it’s great. Can you tell me about writing that song?

So it was the first song we wrote and Matt, our bassist, had the verse and chorus already written. So after we had written out those parts, we brought Austin and Dylan in to really flesh out the song and make it more cohesive and reflective of the sound we wanted to show.

Also the name is a reference to King Of The Hill because Cotton (the main character Hank’s father) had his legs blown off in WW2 and they attached his shins to his feet preventing him from being able to be fitted for prosthetics. It has nothing to do with the lyrics of the song or shintoism in general.

Your EP ‘Life In Motion’ is due out September 6th. What was the recording process like for the EP?

We recorded with one of our best friends, Joe Rom from Innerlove at his studio @Hildamusicco so it was a great time. Having one of your friends really help you bring your sound to reality is such a rewarding experience and he really helped contribute to the overall product.

Do you have a particular song that you’re most excited for people to hear? Why?

The first track of the EP is “Pilot” and it has a pretty sick guitar solo in it. So were pretty excited for people to say “hey that’s a sick guitar solo”.

The EP is coming out through Day Zero Collective. How did you end up working with them?

Mike Varley the person who runs Day Zero is a good friend of ours and we sent him the EP after it was recorded. He was so excited to work with us and be apart of the release process.

Can we expect a physical release for the EP such as CDs, cassettes, or vinyl at any point? How important would a physical release be to the band?

Day Zero is helping us make CDs for the release show. Physical media is a super important part of releasing music because it gives a sense of permanence in people’s listening. Now obviously they’re considered almost collectibles to the music scene. But that’s part of the fun with going to shows nowadays.

Thanks for taking the time to answer the questions. Do you have anything else that you would like to add?

Not really, but it’s cool Oasis is coming back! Really big fans of “Whats the story Morning Glory”. Doesn’t really reflect in our sound, but we think it’s pretty cool. Thanks for the interview!
