Better Place - Sound In The Signals Interview

📸 @category5pictures

I recently had the opportunity to interview Better Place. We discussed their recent EP, releasing it on cassettes, new song “Dayman, Fighter of the Nightman”, collaborating with Derek Berry of TRSH, upcoming plans, and more. Check it out below.

First, thanks for the interview.

No problem!

You recently released your debut EP 'Martial Arts & Forest Animals'. What do you hope listeners take away from the EP? What did you take away from the process of creating it?

This EP was all about showing people what better place is all about. I think what we were going for with Martial Arts & Forest Animals was a mix of everything we could do as a band. You have very high energy songs like: Thrill Hill, and Fuck off and Die-nosaurs, and you have ballads like: Going comma Gone, and Au Revior. I think the EP is a statement of who we were as people at the time, and I hope that shows in the music.

The EP will be released on cassettes via Leave It At That Records. It comes with a zine that features album lyrics, an interview with the band, photos, and more. How important is it to the band to have a physical release as well?

Having physicals for the EP wasn't really on our radar when we first released the EP. It was actually LIAT records that reached out to us about making physicals and we were of course more than happy to make that happen. We are super glad people have something they can call their own with the EP!

You also recently released single "Dayman, Fighter of the Nightman". Can you tell us more about writing that song?

Dayman, Fighter of the Nightman, is the song that we wanted people to stop and say, this is the one. We put a lot of effort into making it, idealizing it, and promoting it. We recorded the song in Missouri with our friend Derek Berry from the band TRSH! It was an amazing time and I think the fun we had recording that track with him shows in the song.

What did he add to your process and the overall song?

Derek is a great musician and producer and he has a lot of experience in the genre that we write in. He was a huge help when it came to honing down the ideas we had for the song and helping us achieve that ideal Midwest emo sound that we were shooting for.

You have a lot of upcoming shows this summer. What are aspects of performing live that you are currently enjoying?

We love performing, I think everyone in the band can agree on that! We have been performing live together as a group longer than Better Place has existed. The energy, the crowd, and just the overall experience of performing is like nothing else and we try to get on stage as much as we can.

What's coming up next for the band? Are you working on more new music? If so, what can you tell us about it so far?

As for what's next for Better Place, we have a super amazing tour coming up in July with Rest Ashore. We will be up and down the east coast of the US and are over the moon to be back on the road again! We also have some new music in the works, collaborating with some amazing emo artists in the scene!

Thanks for taking the time to answer the questions. Is there anything else that you want to add?

Thank you for giving us the opportunity of this interview, we hope you all enjoy Better Place as much as we do. Steam our new single: Dayman, Fighter of the Nightman, on all streaming platforms! And come catch us on tour in July!!
