Stand Still - Sound In The Signals Interview
📸 Elyza Reinhart |
I recently had the opportunity to interview Gerry Windus of Stand Still. We discussed the writing and recording process for new song “In My Blood”, what to expect from the upcoming album, lyrical inspiration, creating album artwork, and more. Check it out below.
First, thanks for the interview.
Thank you!
You recently released new single “In My Blood”. Can you tell me about writing and recording that song?
In My Blood was written much later in the recording process, and became a favorite for most of us almost immediately. It seemed like the perfect canvas for a song about family ties to music and my personal upbringing which led me to wanting to be in bands.
Releasing an album is a lot different of a beast compared to EPs. I know both of your EPs were recorded at the same time. How was writing this album different from those EPs? What stayed the same and what changed about your process?
I’d say the writing part was pretty similar, recording just took much longer because we wanted to make sure it was cohesive as a larger project. There are so many more things you need to be aware of for continuity’s sake.
Where did you record this album at and how long did you work on it?
The album was recorded at Silver Bullet Studios in Connecticut with Greg Thomas and Chris Teti. It took a little over a year to record.
The album has some great melodic moments that are at the core of your sound, but you also have a few heavier moments. What were you were wanting to accomplish with this album sonically?
We wrote a pretty heavy record, kind of on accident, but ended up being excited about it. It takes our elevator pitch as a band and multiplies it by twenty or something. It would have absolutely been the wrong move to go in a softer direction for this.
I think the lyrics on the album are great. Can you tell us more about the songwriting process for the album? Do you usually write music first or are some of the lyrics written before the music?
The music is typically always written first in our case, but I always have ideas floating around that need to find a home. They’ll have a track written, I’ll lay it out and see what ideas fit and how far I can take them. It usually works, and thankfully I was able to make it work ten times for the LP.
You have a few guests on the album. How did it work out for them to be on the album and what do you think they brought to those songs?
Michael and Kristian are friends of ours, and we all agreed they would both be great to have on the record. Michael definitely brings the attitude to his track that it needed, and Kristian is a legend that I’m constantly ripping off so his spot just makes sense.
The artwork for the album is really cool. I think it fits the music perfectly. Who designed the artwork and came up with the concept for it? Where did that image come from?
Thanks! I had the running man idea a while back and we tried shooting it in multiple locations until eventually the photographer Cody Ganzer came up with the train station spot. Our friend Joe on the cover is the most fit man on earth, he must’ve ran a hundred miles trying to get this shot right. Steve edited the picture with the color scheme and layout, and here we are.
Thanks for taking the time to answer the questions. Do you have anything else that you would like to add?
No problem, thanks for having us! We’ve got a bunch of shows, everyone knows where to find them. Shouts out to Daze.
