fred2late - Sound In The Signals Interview

📸 Shauna Presto

I recently had the opportunity to interview fred2late. We discussed writing and recording new song “popcorn in the dark”, the inspiration behind it, a favorite lyrical moment from the song, when to expect more music, and more. Check it out below.

First, thanks for the interview.

Of course.

You recently released your new song “popcorn in the dark”. Have you been pleased with the response it has received so far?

Yeah, definitely. I wasn’t sure what to expect, if anything at all. People seem to really be responding well to it and it’s picking up a little bit of steam on the streaming apps, so it’s already surpassed any expectations I had going into it.

You co-wrote the song with Steve Klein. What was it like working with him on the song?

It was amazing. Steve has written some of my favorite songs of all time, and produced some of my favorite songs of all time. I’ve known him for a long time so it was amazing to get to work with him and see his brain in action. He’s an amazing producer and mixed the hell out of popcorn in the dark

Steve also produced the song. What do you think he brought to the production side of this song?

Steve just has an incredible ear for melody. He’s so good at hearing little things and catering to what I wanted. I wanted the song to have heavier guitars and really have some punch, but still sound polished. I think he did a great job of accomplishing both of those things.

Is this a single or can we expect more new music soon? If so, what can you tell us so far?

I am in the process of writing my first EP right now, which I’ll also do with Steve. I’m hoping to have it out sometime this summer. Steve and his wife just welcomed a new baby, so we have to pause on recording for the next month or so.

The song has really good energy and it has an interesting juxtaposition to the lyrics. Where was your head at when you were working on the song?

Thank you. I was just in a place where I was feeling so stuck. I live in LA, and LA can be a lonely place sometimes. So I hit up Steve and asked him if he’d do a song with me just for fun really. Just to get in the studio and hear some live guitars and do something just for me.

Do you have a favorite lyrical moment from the song? Why?

Hmmm… I love the lines Steve wrote to be honest with you. Steve came up with “it’s time I turn these pages into something you can read”. Like, that’s such a perfect way to say how I was feeling but I couldn’t come up with something nearly as poetic as that sounds haha.

For anyone who may not be familiar, you used to be in Cute Is What We Aim For. That debut album has become a classic and was repressed on vinyl for Fueled By Ramen’s ‘25th Anniversary Vinyl Pressings’. How does it feel to know that the album has become so appreciated by the emo/punk scene?

It’s amazing. It really is. There’s a lot of things we (as in Cute) did wrong and a lot of things I think all of us probably regret about our career as a band, but at least we are remembered for something. We’ll always have that album and a select group of people will probably always hold that album dear to their hearts, just like I have so many albums, especially from my childhood, that I hold dear to my heart. The more time that goes on, the more proud of it I become.

Thanks for taking the time to answer the questions. Do you have anything else that you would like to add?

Love everything you guys are doing! Keep it up.
