Wayfinder - Sound In The Signals Interview

I recently had the opportunity to interview Wayfinder ahead of their EP release. We discussed their move from heavier bands to pop/punk, musical influences, their writing and recording process, and more. Check it out below.

First, thanks for the interview.

Thanks for the interview!! We really appreciate it.

I understand that you all came up in the scene together playing heavy music (deathcore, tech death, metalcore, hardcore etc). Can you tell me how you started the band for those who may be unfamiliar with it? How did you become interested in pursuing music?

Greg, Taylor, and Tyler met in the local metal scene in Edmonton. Greg played in a tech death band and Taylor/Tyler played together in a couple of metalcore projects. We decided to get together and work on a new project that was in direction that suited our tastes more accurately in a pop punk realm. We started writing in 2021 and went through a number of line up changes until Lizzy joined as our vocalist and everything started clicking after that. After becoming cohesive with the new changes, we solidified our set and were itchin’ to start playing live and connect more with our local scene.

I really like your sound. There are a lot of great pop/punk and emo elements. Which bands and/or albums have been some of your biggest influences?

Thank you!! The writing for this next release was very influenced by bands like The Story So Far, Knuckle Puck, Hot Mulligan, and Calling All Captains.

You released your single “Losing Time” in September. Have you been pleased with the response?

We’ve been really happy with the response so far considering we released it with very little following. We’ve gotten great feedback and I think it set a great foundation for us to release the rest of the EP!!

Can you tell me more about writing and recording the song?

I had some of these songs kicking around and we got in touch with our friend Luc Gaffwood from Calling All Captains to help us put together some of the material and get things kickstarted. We used to play metalcore together a long time ago so it was really nice to collaborate with him again.

What’s your favorite part of the writing process?

I like to collab with my friends and see what reveals itself. It’s the best feeling when you put in the work to create something and you can hear the final product. It feels special when you have a final project that everyone has left their impression on.

Can you tell us more about the recording process for your debut EP?

It’s been a lot of fun recording with Ryan Berehulke at SL2 Productions. We’re just getting the masters back and everything is sounding SICK! So satisfying to hear the songs come to their full fruition. We’re in the midst of tying together our album art and we released a music video to accompany the EP drop.

Is there any chance that we’ll see any physical releases like cassettes or vinyl from your band anytime soon? Is that something that is important to your band?

Physical releases are definitely something we’ll have in the future. That is something that I really miss in this age of online music streaming; is having something to hold, something tangible like unpackaging a CD from its plastic film with excitement just to listen to it in your car for the first time. We would love to have a run of CDs & vinyl out as soon as possible. Keep your eyes out for it!

Thanks for taking the time to answer the questions. Do you have anything else that you would like to add?

We have a music video for our song “Afterglow” out now. We’re super stoked to release our first EP called ‘Losing Time’ on February 29th, 2024!! Celebrating the rare LEAP YEAR. Putting together an EP release show and working on a summer Canadian tour.
