The Dallas Cowboys - Sound In The Signals Interview
I recently had the opportunity to interview The Dallas Cowboys. We discussed their new split EP with My Rushmore, the meaning behind the title, creating the artwork, what to expect from their upcoming music, and more. Check it out below.
First, thanks for the interview.
Danny Dallas: no sweat Chet!
Kenny Cowboy: thank u brochoni
You’re released your new split EP with My Rushmore on January 1st. How did My Rushmore and you come together to create it?
Danny Dallas: We first heard of My Rushmore when we were looking to add another show to our Europe tour last summer and they responded to our Instagram saying they’d be down to set something up. We got the show together and when we heard their set we were like swept off our feet. They had really beautiful songs and sounded really tight so we instantly became huge fans, after the show we were talking and the idea of a split came up, I’m not sure who brought it up, but everyone was down!
Kenny Cowboy: This is true. I forgot that we had talked about it and when we got back home, they messaged us asking if we were still down. And it seemed like a really fun thing to do. And would you believe it? It was. They are the most badass band and they didn’t have any music released so we were like dude! You guys gotta get something out there. We’ll do anything.
What was the writing and recording process like for these new songs?
Danny Dallas: The recording process for the new songs was slightly different than usual. For “Don’t Hug Me I’m Scared You’ll Leave” I had the riff for the intro and verses written a long time before we recorded it, maybe a year ago or less, and at some point a few months after that Kenny started working on recording an instrumental. Sometime after that Kenny and I met up to finish it and we ended up using his instrumental for it, but the outro part at the end is from mine and that’s why there’s that weird kinda tempo change. When the instrumental was done we wrote the vocal melody and the lyrics we wrote taking turns, trying to make our lines make sense together.
Kenny Cowboy: Yes and Harry Teardrop mixed and mastered that track which is why it sounds better than our other stuff. The recording process on our end was pretty similar in that we used Logic Pro drums and synths, and DI guitar and bass.
I really like “If at First You Don’t Succeed, Pack Your Bags.” It has a different vibe than a lot of the music you’ve released so far. Can you tell me about writing that song specifically?
Kenny Cowboy: Thank you! It sounds a bit more like stuff from our earlier projects. We started writing that song when we wanted to have an acoustic track for our friend Ed to animate a video to. Also we wanted our second song on this split to be a bit different than the stuff on ashley asked me as a way of opening the door for experimenting with different sounds on our upcoming releases.
Danny Dallas: That song was written over a couple different hang outs, we mainly were trying to keep doing this thing where we trade off writing lines together cuz we did that for Don’t Hug Me I’m Scared You’ll Leave. It’s not as cohesive as that song is lyrically but we still wanted to have that feeling of collaborating on the words.
The split is titled ‘God Save The Scene’. Can you tell us more about the meaning behind that title?
Kenny Cowboy: I think in any scene there is room for improvement. Especially when one grows so fast, there are always growing pains. And I think we can all always push each other harder to make better music and be better to each other.
Danny Dallas: I think the title is really funny, I don’t really see it as about any specific scene but as a general cry of angst and anger. I also like the word scene being there.
The artwork is interesting. I saw Dylan Strassel created it. Who came up with the idea and concept for it?
Kenny Cowboy: I have a theory that Dylan is the perfect album cover creator. I just tell him the album name, send him some references, and he sends me the cover. Hell if I know what’s going on in that brain of his, but I have learned to never question it.
Danny Dallas: I really had nothing to do with the album art that is all Dylan, but I must say I love the color red and I’ve been wearing it a lot lately. Dylan Strassel is the goat of art and everyone should hit him up for art.
I saw that you’re releasing CDs for the split. Can we expect any other physical releases for it such as cassettes or vinyl?
Kenny Cowboy: Hunk Of Plastic was kind enough to invite us back and are making cassettes for EU distribution. No plans for vinyl.
Danny Dallas: Yup, we’ll have cassettes. Vinyl would be really cool but I don’t see that happening any time soon.
I also saw that you’ve been talking about more new music and the potential for EPs and a new album. If so, how far along in the process are you with that? What can you tell us so far?
Danny Dallas: Yeah! We have a lot of stuff we need to do but the first thing on the list is start writing this EP after the split, we’re gonna try and have it be a continuation of the sound we were going for in the first album, but with more metal/mallcore influence and some real drums. After that is done and put out we’re gonna start trying to write an album that is like the old stuff but also gonna be experimental, we don’t know too much about what we want to do there except we know we want it to be a concept album and to tell a coherent story.
Kenny Cowboy: We have been performing 3 or 4 songs, that we have instrumentals recorded of, and those will be on the next EP once we finish vocals. And we have a bunch of other demos that we’ll probably workshop and finish. The next album is completely not started.
Thanks for taking the time to answer the questions. Do you have anything else that you would like to add?
Kenny Cowboy: Check out the cd on sex-Emo.com and the tape will be out soon on hunkofplastic. Thanks sex Emo, thanks My Rushmore and thanks anyone who listens to us!
Danny Dallas: Of course!! Thank you so much for taking the time to write these fire Q’s, and also thank you to anyone else who gives a hoot enough to get this far. :D
