Ellen May - Sound In The Signals Interview

I recently had the opportunity to interview Matt M of Ellen May. We discussed how they formed the band, musical influences, their upcoming EP, working with We’re Trying Records, and more. Check it out below.

First, thanks for the interview.

Our absolute pleasure, thanks for featuring us, we appreciate it!

Can you tell me how you started the band for those who may be unfamiliar with it? How did you become interested in music?

The project started after vocalist Matt posted an advert on a local Facebook group. Matt M saw the post, sent a message and the rest is history as they say. A few demos were sent around and slowly but surely we started getting some demos together.

I’ve always been a fan of music and always had music playing in the house somewhat as a child. It wasn’t until I started high school that I picked up a bass guitar. That eventually led me to playing guitar and writing my own music

Who are some of your biggest musical influences?

The Wonder Years, blink-182, MXPX, The Story So Far, Moose Blood, Free Throw and Hot Mulligan

To people who haven’t heard your band before, which song would you recommend as a good starting point and why?

Where The Heart Lies is a good starting point. It has all the elements that make our music - punchy rhythms, emotive lyrics and Matt really showcases his vocals throughout

You have some new music coming out this year. How far along are you in the writing and recording process?

We’ve finished everything as far as recording, which we did all ourselves. We’re just in the process of having the last few songs mixed and mastered.

Can we expect a new EP or album? What can you tell us about it so far?

The project will be an ep with the first single How It Came To This dropping on January 19th. The ep will be released through We’re Trying Records, which is really cool.

You were featured on the Sad Jams playlist from We’re Trying Records. What did it feel like being featured on such a cool playlist?

It’s really cool to be featured on such a cool playlist that consistently has amazing bands is truly an honour. The fact we are recognised all the way in America from our little town in Perth, Western Australia is still mind blowing.

Thanks for taking the time to answer the questions. Do you have anything else that you would like to add?

Thanks to everyone who has listened to our music. We’re really blown away with the response and it’s far greater than we expected. We also want to say thank you to We’re Trying Records for believing in us, we’re really grateful.
