Capillary - Sound In The Signals Interview

I recently had the opportunity to interview Capillary. We discussed how they formed the band, their new demo EP, collaborating with 51st State Records, artwork, and more. Check it out below.

First, thanks for the interview.

Thanks for having us.

The band is comprised of members from a couple different bands. Can you tell me how you started the band for those who may be unfamiliar with it?

Everyone involved sort of met at different times. One of us is from the central Jersey shore area while the rest are all from South Jersey. We first started getting friendly at hardcore shows a few years back from our bands playing shows together. Jake played in Shackled at the time and Colin and Benny play in Not One Truth, and we all hit it off so it seemed like a matter of time until we did some type of band together. Jim our bassist lives around the corner from Benny and Colin and seemed like the logical move to bring him in.

You recently released your new demo EP. Can you tell me more about writing and recording the EP?

Colin and Benny wrote the instrumentals for this during Covid (Winter of 2021) and were trying to figure out how to further the tracks and since they had been talking to Jake about doing some type of band they brought him in on vocals.

I really like “Wilting”. When was that song written during the EP writing process? What were your lyrical inspirations for the song?

This was the third instrumental that we wrote for the EP. It all started when Brendan came to Colin with an interlude (Cave). The song starts with the same chord that the interlude ends with so the flow is really nice. That one's the unabashedly situationship-gone-wrong song. Though it's meant to ultimately push a positive message when all's said and done.

You released the EP on 51st State Records, which is Joey from Koyo’s label. How did it work out for you to be on the label?

We had the tracks and we were looking for a good home to help us get them out there. Joey really seemed to dig the songs and the vibe we're going for and was immediately down to be a part. It's been super cool working with him and he killed it with the release.

The artwork for the demo is cool and I think it captures the style and vibe of the music really well. Where did you get that picture from?

Colin took this picture when NOT was on tour last winter. It was on the U.S. border of Niagara falls.

You’re also releasing a cassette for the EP featuring alternative artwork. Who came up with the idea for doing that and who designed the artwork?

The alternative art work for the cassette was put together by Sean Crim (Shout out Sinister Feeling/Morbideity). The picture of the angel came from a scan of a painting that is in Colin's grandma's house.

I’ve seen people say that your music represents how hardcore musicians that form emo bands create some of the best songs for the genre. How does coming from a hardcore band impact your writing when you’re working on Capillary songs? What are your thoughts on that?

In terms of actually writing songs, I personally see them as separate entities as you want to suit the style while serving the genre. In other words, not trying to force doing some type of crossover thing. But in terms of ethos, it's totally the same. Coming from hardcore bands makes it easy for us to just get together and make something raw and real. We've got a lot of influences though and tried to work a lot of them into the release, while hopefully doing our own thing outside of it all.

Thanks for taking the time to answer the questions. Do you have anything else that you would like to add?

Thank you to everyone that has shown interest in our new band thus far! We are very excited to play shows and put out more music. Capillary LP 2024.
