Save Ferris - Sound In The Signals Interview
I recently had the opportunity to interview Monique Powell of Save Ferris. We discussed new song “Xmas Blue”, what to expect from the band’s upcoming music, thoughts on the band’s iconic discography, the potential for new vinyl pressings, and more. Check it out below.
First, thanks for the interview.
You’re very welcome!!
You recently released your new song “Xmas Blue”. It’s your first new song since 2017. Can you tell me about writing and recording the song?
I wrote the song in 2017 and never did anything with it….my inspiration was someone I used to know that was so obsessed with his ex-wife, even some years later, that it was borderline stalking. I was so sad for him.
Then I started working with my producer Michael Bradford, and it was all uphill from there! It’s amazing to finally hear the song in its finished form.
Do you have a favorite lyrical or musical moment from the song? Why?
I love all the harmonies I did for the song…layered harmonies always make me so happy. I also like the punk ethos. I felt we needed more ska-punk alternative Christmas music, hopefully this ends up on everyone’s Spotify playlists this year and for years to come.
You’ve teased that more new music will be coming out in 2024. What can fans expect from the new music in terms of the style and overall sound?
Working with Michael Bradford has given me a new motivation and a joy in writing I haven’t felt in a long time. You’re going to hear the Save Ferris you’ve always wanted. My vision for the musical progression of this band over the last 25 years is finally aligned with my ability to produce the sounds and songs our fans deserve. Stay tuned!
What’s your favorite part about writing songs currently?
See #4 :)
Ska has had a nice resurgence over the last few years with labels like Bad Time Records and bands like Catbite, Joystick, and Flying Raccoon Suit. Do you keep up with newer artists?
Some, although I’ve never heard of the artists you’ve mentioned, now I have some listening to do!
Your debut album, ‘It Means Everything’, is a classic album in the ska and punk genre. It’s one of the most important albums from that era of ska. Did you ever think it would have the lasting influence and impact it has had when you were working on it?
Not really. I approached the old SF music with the same lightheartedness the songs reflected. I was so young, and hopeful, but never ever imagined it would do what it did.
Fans surely know why, but why do you think your music has stood the test of time?
Good writing and live performances that make fans feel valued and included-our live performance has always brought an unforgettable feeling for everyone in attendance. So unforgettable that people still talk about their first SF show as being one of the best shows they’ve ever seen.
Which songs still feel just as good to play as they did when you first recorded them?
“Lies”, “Modified” (secret track), “What You See Is What You Get”.
Vinyl has become so popular in the last several years. A lot of fans would love to see ‘It Means Everything’ and ‘Modified’ on vinyl. Is there any chance that we’ll see that happen in the near future?
Absolutely! It’s all happening!!
Thanks for taking the time to answer the questions. Do you have anything else that you would like to add?
Thanks for your interest in the band. You Mean Everything!!
