No Momentum - Sound In The Signals Interview

📸 Jonathan Renino
I recently had the opportunity to interview No Momentum. We discussed writing and recording new album, ‘relax, enjoy life’, how ‘King of the Hill’ inspired the artwork and theme of the album, pressing it on vinyl, and more. Check it out below.

First, thanks for the interview.

Thank you for having us!

Your new album ‘relax, enjoy life’ comes out December 1st. Can you tell me about writing and recording the album?

We wrote the first song for this album in the spring of 2020 and with that had an entire other album mostly written. Only three of those songs made it to the new record. The other one was scrapped with a bunch of songs still in limbo. We added a new guitarist, Curt, between scrapping the original record and finishing the new one. We feel that the new batch of songs capture our sound a lot better than the original plan did. We were also able to record with all of our own equipment for the first time, as usually we just use whatever equipment is in-studio, so it was a lot more personal and fun for us.

You released the lead single “Enjoy Life”. What made you decide to go with that song as the lead single?

We’re really proud of this song, we thought it sets the stage for the rest of the release very well, and none of the other songs jumped out at us the same way we felt this one had. We liked its energy and how it covers a lot of ground sonically in such a brief amount of time.

I really like the artwork. It feels very ‘King of the Hill’ inspired. Lillian Wilkinson did the artwork. What was that experience like?

This whole album has a King of the Hill theme. The show has had a big impact on some of us, and lyrical content and themes throughout the record were designed to highlight that. Lily is a close friend of the band so she was an easy shoe-in for design the art and she captured our ideas perfectly!

What is the meaning behind the artwork?

It’s all about relaxing and enjoying life. The wireframe character on the cover is Jordan who is the band mascot in a way and was on the cover of LP1, Everything’s Whatever, so we had to include him here too.

Which song on the album was the easiest to write and which song took you the longest to complete? Why?

Honestly, a decent amount of the time we just throw songs together pretty quickly and it just works. We wrote Untitled (the last song written for the album) in one practice shortly after Curt joined. Tiger Drop and Boy Ain’t Right took a while specifically with finishing lyrics. Musically, we usually don’t take long at all to flesh out songs. From there, we add parts and fine-tune things, but overall it was pretty quick for each song.

Do you have a song that you’re most excited for people to hear? Why?

I think we each have a different answer for this one…

Kelly: Ashamed, because it’s pretty different from a lot of our songs.

Dan: It’s Never Too Early, because it’s probably my favorite song off this album and I’m excited for it to be heard.

Marty: Boy Ain’t Right, because it’s arranged really well, it’s a strong riff and it’s strong melodically.

Curt: The intro song, Relax, because it’ll complete the single, Enjoy Life.

Can we expect a cassette or vinyl release for the album? If not, is that something that you would like to do?

We actually just received the vinyl and honestly, we cannot put into words how awesome it feels to have it. It’s a perfect record for people to fling at their walls once they’ve paid us. Looking for a goal of 30 smashed records, making it even rarer!

Thanks for taking the time to answer the questions. Do you have anything else that you would like to add?

We've got our release show coming up on December 16th, at St. Andrews in New Paltz, NY. We also have a tour coming up in January that we’re super excited about; follow us (@nomomentumny) to stay up to date on that.
