Sparing - Sound In The Signals Interview

Brooke Nicole
I recently had the opportunity to interview Sparing. We discussed the writing process for new song “Static At The End”, lyrical inspiration, their 7” split release with Lovewell, branching out into releasing music with Another Year Collective, and more. Check it out below.

First, thanks for the interview.

Thank you! Stoked SITS has been in our lives for a few years now. Always good to link back up.

You recently released your new single “Static At The End”. Can you tell me about writing the song?

With this track, I knew I wanted to do things pretty different from how I did the first two releases. I felt that the band had somewhat hit a wall of what I was getting from the songs, and to me when that happens it’s time to pivot. So I changed up where I recorded, opened my brain up to the idea of having other songwriters involved other than myself, and ended up staying close to home to record instead of making a travel to record for an entire week away from home.

This time I had my good friend Will Desmarais of the band The Aliso/Sincerely Me produce and record the record as well as help with the song writing process. And I think it really resulted in my favorite Sparing song.

What are some of the lyrical themes and lyrical inspirations for the song?

The main idea lyrically for Static At The End is when you creatively (and in my life musically) push yourself and sacrifice time and money into a passion, but after it’s over not much has changed for the project, and you’ve kind of just ended up in the same spot you started in. That feeling of “am I wasting my time?” And “am I even writing these songs for me anymore?” creep into your mind. And the process of saying screw it and powering through those feelings. It’s easy to doubt yourself and look at others success and critique your own art, and then doing so invalidates all the hard work you know you’ve been putting in.

What were some of your biggest influences for this one sonically?

Same sounds as usual, just that early 2000s warped tour/drive thru records era records. With a hint of self titled blink-182 sprinkled in there haha. We came up with an amazing bridge for the song, where we layered tons of guitar, sound clips and effects, and it just came out sounding like something out of the Tom Delonge playbook. I’m super pumped with how that spot came out.

Have you been working on more new music or is this more of a one off single? If so, what can you tell us so far?

This is strictly a one of single. I have yet to put out just a single track or a split with another band so I wanted to use this time to just keep it fresh, and again do something totally different than I have on the last few drops.

You’re also releasing a 7 inch for this song. What can you tell me about it so far?

Totally, so the split with Lovewell is going to pressed on a 7” lathe picture disc. Side A Lovewell, and Side B Sparing respectively. Lovewell is a band out of Boston area that I’ve always felt on the same page creatively as. With their aesthetics and art/merch choice, and how they promote their band. It was one of those things that I knew we would work together some day and I’m stoked we pulled this off!

The 7” will be released on your label. What made you decide to start a label and how’s it going so far?

Another Year Collective started as a podcast, and a way for me and my buddies to stay in touch and just talk about music. But as the collective has grown we’ve wanted to branch out and do other ventures under the same AYC name. I’m about to be a father for the first time, and with that I know my time to actually make my own music and play shows is going to slow way down.

But I didn’t want it to stop me from helping smaller bands and elevating their releases in the same way a smaller label like Sunday Drive Records did for me. Sometimes just having an established label co-sign on your band makes some eyeballs give you a shot, and I wanted to give that same push to newer bands trying to make a name for themselves.

Thanks for taking the time to answer the questions. Do you have anything else that you would like to add?

Check out the other records we are working on with Another Year Collective. Such Cruelty & Warning Order, both amazing hardcore bands out of the Carolinas, and thanks to everyone who’s listened or picked up the copy of the new single!
