Gwuak! - Sound In The Signals Interview
I recently had the opportunity to interview Zach of Gwuak!. We discussed signing with Thumbs Up Records, favorite releases from the label, releasing more cassettes for the EP, the writing process and musical influences for the upcoming album, and more. Check it out below.
First, thanks for the interview.
Of course! Stoked to do it.
You recently announced that you signed with Thumbs Up Records. How did it work out for you to sign with the label and what made you want to sign with them?
Brady of Thumbs Up had reached out to us expressing that he wanted to work with us. After a bit of talking with Brady, we felt that it would be a good move.
Thumbs Up has been releasing a lot of good music over the last couple of years. Do you have a favorite artist or release that they’ve put out?
Guitar Fight's "soak" will always hold a special place in my heart, and I love their sound. EMWAY and their new EP also have a super sick and refreshing sound.
Along with the signing, you also announced a new cassette run for your EP. How excited are you to have some more cassettes for that release?
Very !! I definitely feel that physical copies of music are always better. also gwuak on a cassette tape is just so rock n roll !!
An album is being teased for next year. What can you tell me about it so far? How far along in the writing and recording process are you?
So far the writing process is finished and we have demos of all the songs. Without giving too much away, we believe we have found someone to record it all with and hope to record early next year.
What has changed or stayed the same in your writing process since the EP?
Most of it has remained the same; I jam on my guitar and stumble across cool ideas and take it from there. I tend to write 100% of guitars first, program the drums that I hear, then send it over to Daniel with and without those drums and see what his take is. I usually write vocals last.
What are some of the musical influences or lyrical themes for the new music?
I’d say musical influences for this new album were a lot of what I was listening to, which would include Chon's s/t, Commander Salamander's "off the goop", Dismemberment Plan's "Emergency & I", Vacations’ "Days", and Floral's LP.
Lyric-wise, the album is definitely a little more serious, discussing topics like dealing with not knowing what to do with life, depression, and anxiety, with a little bit of nonsense and not so serious stuff sprinkled in between.
Do you have a song or two that you’re most excited for people to hear? Why?
I’m excited to get this album out there honestly. I’ve worked so hard and I feel that this collection of songs is a great step forward, while still maintaining what gwuak's sound has been up to this point. I just can’t wait to put some new music out.
Do you have plans to release it on vinyl or cassettes?
Yes !! We plan and would love to do both.
What are some of your other plans for 2023? Do you have plans to tour?
We don’t have anything booked at this time, but we want to play some shows more than anything.
Thanks for taking the time to answer the questions. Do you have anything else that you would like to add?
Of course !! Thank you for reaching out to do this, y'all rock <3
