Ogbert the Nerd - Sound In The Signals Interview
I recently had the opportunity to interview Ogbert the Nerd. We discussed the writing and recording process for new song, “A New Kind Of Borkulator”, recording at Domestic Bliss, favorite moments from the song, their upcoming tour, vinyl represses, the potential for new music, and more. Check it out below.
First, thanks for the interview.
No, thank you!
You recently released new song, “A New Kind Of Borkulator”. Can you tell me about the writing and recording process for the song?
Yee. So Ross came up with the progressions. He spent a good amount of time working at a place playing a lot of bossa nova type music and took that to practice one day. We kinda write songs like people make Youtube poops where we just take a riff we like playing then mutate and fuck around with bits til it makes us go “haha cool” and that’s basically what happened with this.
For the lyrics, I have a pretty weird relationship with home life and feeling like I belong places, which I like to think has gotten better, but I ruminate a lot on being a queer teenager repressing a lot of shit and sacrificing parts of who I was to feel some semblance of placement where I shouldn’t have. Again, another thing I like to think with my age I’ve gotten better at but there’s a lot of times where I feel like I don’t. The song is about facing that from the outside and gnashing teeth about the frustration of justifying where you’re standing or how you’re standing. Like, fuck you I’ll cross my fucking legs, you stupid fucking asshole.
You recorded the song at Domestic Bliss. What was it like recording there?
Honestly, fantastic. I can’t recommend working with Max enough. Like, such a fun dude with such a good ear and spirit. We were on our feet the whole time shaking things and screaming things. We recorded everything before this ourselves so getting into a studio and doing that as opposed to our own studio was a blast.
Do you have a favorite musical or lyrical moment from it?
Probably the carissa’s wierd reference that nobody is mentioning. Or Shawn screaming “go!” all the way at the ending.
Is this a one off-single or can we expect more new music this year? Is there any chance that you’re working on an EP or album?
If I told you I’d have to kill you.
Along with the song release you also announced a tour. What can fans expect from the live show and set list? Do you have any surprises planned?
Oh yeah. We hand picked everybody playing the shows because they’re all friends we’ve made and people we admire a lot. We don’t really have a lot of chances to go out like this given life obligations, work, whathaveyou, so we’re just going fucking nuts at every stop. I can’t promise anything specifically but like, it’s gonna be a great time.
Is there any chance that we might see some vinyl represses of your music anytime soon?
Yeah! There’s a second pressing of ‘i don’t hate you’ going up soon through our friends’ labels /300. Doing vinyl is honestly not worth it nowadays with the climate of how bad turnarounds have been but we worked something out and we’re really excited to roll it out. That should be happening very soon.
Thanks for taking the time to answer the questions. Do you have anything else that you would like to add?
All of you should delete all the apps off your phone except the games and a maps app. I debated getting a basic phone when my iPhone broke but I like being dumb online at my convenience so I go through the extra step to get pointless attention when I want to. Also we’re working on stuff so keep an eye out. We kinda only do what we want to do when we want to do it so I can’t really give anything away honestly.
