House Parties - Sound In The Signals Interview
Bobby Biedinger |
I recently had the opportunity to interview House Parties. We discussed the band’s new lineup, writing and recording their new song, “Collateral”, lyrical inspiration, streaming success, creating single artwork, what’s next for the band, and more. Check it out below.
First, thanks for the interview.
You’re welcome! Glad we could be here.
You recently announced a new era and new members. Tell us more about this change and how the new members joined the band.
Since Wes and Haley joined everything’s been solid. Our old members were really just fill-ins until we found new people. We all want to write and contribute, which is nice to have all parties and minds involved in the creative process.
Your new song, “Collateral” comes out in August. Can you tell me about writing and recording the song?
Yes! It comes out August 13th also the same day as our first show at Emo Nite in Dallas, Texas. The recording process was basically the same for every song we have including Hindsight. Spencer does all the writing, pre-mixing, recording such as drums, bass, guitar you name it. This time though we did record in a home made studio he built in the garage in the house we were living in at the time.
What was your lyrical inspiration for the song?
My lyrical inspiration for this song was basically old Tonight Alive and Paramore type of vibes. The song is about being stuck in a constant cycle of bad habits that you’re trying to break. Sometimes it seems easy to, but there are days where you fall back into it and have to start the process all over again. Kind of like Hindsight but more with yourself than with another person.
I like the vocal trade-off between you and Spencer on the song. Is that something that we might hear more on future songs?
Yes! While Spencer does practically everything for the band and can play anything, he’s also an insanely talented singer. He has such a raw tone that just fits perfectly for what we do. So yes, you will hear him quite a lot on upcoming songs and at our shows.
“Hindsight” has been doing really well and it seems like your audience has grown a lot since we last talked. Have you been pleased with the response to that song?
Hindsight recently reached 20,000 streams on Spotify and that means so much to us. We didn’t think people would be liking the song as much as we thought, even Wendy’s, the fast food chain, loves it so much they put it on their playlist! We will say that if you love Hindsight, just get ready for what we’re about the release this year.
Will “Collateral” be another standalone single or are you working towards an album or EP?
Collateral will be released as a single but will be the second song on our upcoming EP. I can’t say too much right now but we will announce it very soon.
One thing I really like about your approach to the music you’ve released is that you have really good artwork for the singles. Who came up with the concept and design for the artwork for “Collateral”?
So we have a friend of the band, Zander, who helped come up with the EP artwork and we spent months building it. We then decided to release some singles before hand and make those singles have artwork that are the “animated” version of the EP. The person who does all of our artwork including merch is Daniel Hambright. He is such a talented artist and comes through for us every single time. He always understands what we’re going for and even goes beyond our expectations sometimes. (@elynia_productions)
What is the meaning behind the artwork?
Collateral’s artwork is a drawing of the beautiful backyard with a garden and bird on the white picket fence. In the sky you can see a terrifying meteor headed down to crash. The meaning of the artwork is while being stuck in this cycle and falling back into bad habits, it’s kind of like you want it to stop or more damage is yet to come. And that’s what the meteor is for, you don’t want it there and it’s terrifying but it’s there anyways.
You’re playing your first show soon. What can fans expect from the live show and do you have a song that you’re most excited to perform live?
Actually, this was very last minute but we’re playing our first show at Emo Nite in Dallas, Texas on August 13th! Let’s just say we’re playing all new songs along with a kick ass cover. Expect crowd participation.
Thanks for taking the time to answer the questions. Do you have anything else that you would like to add?
Yes, if you need anything mixed, mastered, help writing and don’t know where to start please hit up our guitarist Spencer Trinidad. (@sctrinidad11) He’s your man.
