Charlotte Sands - Sound In The Signals Interview

Jacqueline Day

I recently had the opportunity to interview Charlotte Sands. We discussed writing and recording new song, “Bad Day”, how she tried something she had never done before when recording, lyrical inspiration, what she hopes listeners take away from the song, what to expect for the remainder of the year, and more. Check it out below.

First, thanks for the interview.

Of course! Happy to do it.

Your new song, “Bad Day” recently came out. Can you tell me about the writing and recording process for the song?

This song was written over Zoom with Danen Reed Rector and Pat Mencel. I was in a pretty rough place emotionally and started talking to them about how I felt and how frustrating it was to not feel capable of sitting in my emotions because I constantly try to make myself get over them as quickly as possible. In our society, it's super common to be told to "get over it" instead of allowing people to take time and feel how they feel, and that's when we started writing "Bad Day".

The chorus of the song is so catchy and I really like the lyrics. How long did you work on the chorus? What was your inspiration?

Thank you! The session was actually pretty short, once we started writing, it fell out of us pretty quickly! We wanted to make it really anthemic and easy to sing along to so that anybody who related to the song at all would be able to scream it at the top of their lungs.

One of my favorite moments in the song is when you use a rapid-fire vocal delivery and it sounds almost like you’re rapping. How did you come up with that?

Danen and I actually met up a few days after the initial session to record vocals and wrote that part. We wanted to do something different that I had never done, and something that would catch people off-guard a little bit, and that's what we came up with!

This song sounds and feels like a big anthem song for you. Do you think that’s true? What do you hope listeners take away from it?

I definitely think this song has an anthemic feel sonically but also because of how relatable it is for so many different people. I want any and everybody who feels the same way to be able to sing it and be a part of it, and hopefully that in itself can be therapeutic.

Can we expect more new music from you this year? What can you tell us about it?

Absolutely! I will be consistently releasing music for the rest of the year as well as videos and so much more fun stuff. I am so excited for these songs and have truly never been more proud of a project, so I hope you like it!

Is there any chance that any of your music will get a vinyl pressing at some point?

I have always loved vinyl and would definitely want to do that in the future!

Thanks for taking the time to answer the questions. Do you have anything else that you would like to add?

Thank you for asking them! The video for "Bad Day" came out yesterday, so if you haven't seen it, make sure to check it out!
