Carpool Tunnel - Sound In The Signals Interview

I recently had the opportunity to interview Carpool Tunnel. We discussed the band’s decision to join Pure Noise Records, writing, recording, and filming a video for their new single, “Empty Faces”, what’s next for the band, and more. Check it out below.

First, thanks for the interview.

No worries! Our pleasure!

You recently announced that you signed to Pure Noise Records. What made you want to sign to the label? How has the experience been so far?

Deciding to sign to a label was a tough choice for us to make. We had never dealt much with the business sides of the music industry and had no idea where to start when it came to signing to a label. We recorded our debut album, which is set to release early next year, in October of 2019. After we recorded the album, we realized we had created something pretty spectacular and started to get a few offers for potential labels. After lots and lots of consulting with friends, family, and whoever was willing to offer us advice, we finally came to a decision. Pure Noise’s team was extremely genuine and our gut feeling told us that this was the right move for the band. So far it’s been amazing! Pure Noise gives us a lot of freedom when it comes to decisions and they are extremely supportive of all of our ideas. We are so excited to be releasing our first album with them and are beyond stoked to see where it will bring us!

You released the song “Empty Faces” along with the announcement. Can you tell me about writing and recording the song?

Absolutely! We wrote the song a little under two years ago and only several months before we went into the studio. At the time we were really wanting to write a song that evoked a lot of the same emotions that our first song “Shining” made us feel. That, combined with a lot of feelings of how social media was affecting our lives, brought us to the idea of an empty face. This idea shows that a lot of people are still in our lives from our pasts, but we really have no true connection to them other than what we see through social media. The recording of the song was done down in West Hollywood at Rev 9 Studios in October of 2019. It’s a song that we have had finished for quite some time and have been really wanting people to hear, so we are beyond happy that it is out, but honestly its timing couldn’t have been better!

I really like it. Why did you feel like it was the song to release with your signing announcement?

The reason we chose to have this be our first single with Pure Noise is because of its emotional power. We felt that it had strong relevance to how we are all feeling right now with the shelter-in-place orders that are keeping us apart. We wanted to put our strongest foot forward and we felt that this song was a great introduction to how the album is going to feel and sound.

You also released a video for the song. Can you tell me about how you came up with the concept for it and put it together?

Our wonderful and amazingly talented friend Michael Hanano came up with a lot of the concepts and shot the whole thing himself! We knew we wanted to be in the video as the band, but definitely not as the main roles. Instead we decided that we would have our main character be our friend Gwyneth Forrester, who plays a young adult who is infatuated with her local music scene, but is held back by her social anxiety. In the story, she goes to a local show, but is struck with anxiety despite her eagerness to see her favorite band. Hanano was able to shoot, direct, and produce the video with a non-existent budget. Even the Volvo 240 is owned by yours truly, Bradley Kearlsey, the lead guitarist of the band! We were astonished by how well Michael Hanano did on the project!

What’s coming up for the band in 2021?

Our album will be coming out shortly next year, but we can’t say quite yet the exact date. We hope to be playing as many shows as we can once everything opens up again so expect to see us on the road. Besides that we will be making tons of content on our social media channels and coming out with a ton of music videos for all of our tracks. Hope to see you out there!

Thanks for taking the time to answer the questions. Do you have anything else that you would like to add?

Just want to send some positive/good vibes to all of our family out there. We wouldn’t be here without any of you and we are beyond grateful for that! We can’t wait to keep writing more tunes for y’all and to play the best performances of our lives once we can return to the stage again. Until then, stay safe and make sure to remind your friends and family how much you love them! We will all get through this together! See you soon y’all!
