One Up - Sound In The Signals Interview
Absolutely! Thank you for having me! I'll start by introducing myself. My name is Nick Reitman and I play guitar and also sing for One Up.
You just released your new single “Last Call”. Can you tell me a little about the single? What inspired this song? Can you tell us about writing and recording it?
Yes, so far we are loving the positive feedback and it makes us really excited for the record to come out. I like to think the way that we write the songs is pretty unique. Alan and I (fun fact: we are brothers born on the same day, 5 years apart!) are both super into music production and have our own home studio set-ups. The process is usually that one of us comes up with the initial idea and we sort of fill in the blanks after that. We actually have a giant folder of ideas that we submit songs to, and from there on, we decide if we will pursue them. Anyways, I'll never forget "Last Call" specifically, because Alan came up to me and was like "DUDE! You HAVE to come sing a part on this." I didn't know what I got into, but after we had a completed demo, we knew that this one was the jam. We knew TJ would bring an entire new life to it as well. We decided to get the album professionally done by one of our favorite producers, Taylor Larson. If you don't know Taylor, he's worked with bands like Asking Alexandria, Periphery, I see stars, Jason Richardson, etc. It was an incredible experience to work with Taylor and he brought a lot of cool ideas to the song and production. Taylor actually loved our demos we brought in, and not a lot of the song changed in the process, but it was awesome to see him oversee it and throw ideas to us.
I really like the video. Who came up with the concept for it and what was the video shoot like?
I'm not quite sure why, but again, Alan came up to us and was like "Dude, lifeguards and only mustache for the video." At this point, I turned to him and said "You're crazy, I'm not going to shave my beard for this." Anyways, if you've seen the video, you know I didn't get myself out of that one! HAHA! Shooting the video was awesome. Our director, Brandan Keller, took our concept and saw sort of a "Stranger Things Season 3" Vibe and we went for that! Brandan always makes filming super enjoyable and we have a lot of fun shooting the funny stuff.
Where did you film the video at and what made you pick that specific location?
The Video was filmed in two different locations. The main location was filmed in a private backyard pool in our home town in New Baltimore, MI. And The second location was filmed at Metro Beach in Harrison Township, MI.
You just finished recording a new full length. What can you tell us about the writing and recording process? How long did you work on it? What should fans expect?
The full length is personally one of my best accomplishments. We're so proud of how it turned out. Like I mentioned earlier, we've been submitting music to this folder for about a year and eventually got to a point where we decided on a full length album. "Last Call" is kind of the tip of the ice berg when it comes to energy on this CD. If you know our single "Hate Me," there is definitely a lot of that up beat and fast energy on the CD. Every song has a hook that has been stuck in my head. I can't wait to show more of it!
What else is coming up for your band for the remainder of 2019?
We plan to release a couple more singles with videos and really focus on getting this album by the end of this year. Now that things have settled, we plan to pick up a few more show opportunities and to keep spreading the word of the new material!
I guess that wraps it up. Thanks for taking the time to answer the questions. Do you have anything else that you would like to add?
