Sunsleeper - Sound In The Signals Interview

I recently had the chance to interview Sunsleeper. Check out the full interview below.

First off, thanks for the interview.
Jeffery Mudgett (Vocals/Guitar): No problem! Thank you for your interest.

For anyone not familiar with Sunsleeper can you tell me how you got together and formed the band? What got you into music?
My old band broke up in December 2014 because one of our core songwriters no longer found it feasible to continue pursing music. Seeing as he was essential to our sound the band decided to call it quits. Immediately after the disbandment I began writing for a new project and started searching for new people to collaborate with. With the help of my good friend Tylor Blackburn I was able to sync up with Scott Schilling who was a local musician from the Salt Lake area who I had met in passing previously. After trying out several bassists over the course of a year, Scott eventually invited Eli to come jam with us who then completed our elusive lineup.

Music has always been a constant in my life. I was raised in a very musical household. I was taught piano, trumpet and trombone growing up. Eventually I was introduced to guitar by my best friend in high school. He also introduced me to Brand New who later would become one of my favorite bands. Their music inspired us to pursue creating our own music.

You released your EP 'Stay the Same' last year. I really like it a lot. What was the writing and recording process for the album?
We began writing together at the beginning of 2015 and by the end of that year had successfully found our sound and had the majority of our EP written. In February of 2016 we found Eli which was just in time for him to be involved with the recording process which took place in March. We flew Nathan Hussey (All Get Out) in from Texas to co-produce/engineer/mix the record with local musician/friend Andrew Goldring. The recording process flew by, taking less than a week to complete. It was a really awesome experience working with Nate and Andrew. They were crucial to bringing the EP to life.

I really like the song "Maple Drive". Can you tell me a little about writing that song in particular?
Maple Drive was actually the first song we wrote together as a band. It was the song that kind of affirmed our sound/direction. The lyrics are about coping with a failed friendship/relationship.

Now that the EP has been out a little while have you been pleased with the response? Have you noticed any universal fan favorite songs from it?
We've been blown away by how well the EP has been received in such a short amount of time. We're exceedingly grateful to anyone who has taken the time to check us out.
I'd say the songs that get the best reaction are either 'Break or Bury' or 'Come Back Home'.

You released a limited cassette version of the EP. How important was it to you for the EP to come out in a limited collectable format like cassette or vinyl?
I am an avid vinyl, cassette and CD collector, so for me it's very important. Records are such cool pieces of tangible art. I don't feel like you can really grasp or absorb an album as a whole until you've got your hands on a tangible version of it and can experience the artwork inside and out.

Any chance we'll see a vinyl release for the EP?
We're in the beginning stages of planning the vinyl release of our EP. So you can expect that (probably) before the end of this year.

I guess that wraps it up. Thanks for taking the time to answer the questions. Do you have anything else you would like to add?
Thanks again for your interest! It's much appreciated.
