01. Blink-182 - California
In many ways, this album is the life blood of my 2016. It was my most anticipated album and not only did it live up to the hype, but it surpassed pretty much every expectation I had for it. Blink-182 was a staple for a lot of people from my generation. That being said the years after Takeoff... were pretty much splattered with some good and bad experimentation, break-ups, low expectations for fans, and promises that always seemed to fall through from the band. It has been trying at times to be a Blink-182 fan, pretty much since around 2003-4. This album is the first without founding member Tom DeLonge and that's rough, but it honestly might be their best since Takeoff.... It's at least tied with the self-titled album, in my opinion. I've heard the critics of this album all year both good and bad. I can't deny that California, for me, was the one that really lit this year up and gave me everything I wanted and more. It's chocked full of everything I like about Blink. It's their best produced and tightest sounding material in years. I thought Skiba fit in nicely, added a lot to this album, and worked really well as the new member in the band. I think it not only lives up to their past material, but it also introduces them in a big way to a younger generation. It also interrupted Drake's summer reign on the Billboard charts in surprising fashion and that was neat to see. It was just a cool year for Blink-182 and a great year to be a Blink fan.
