You Know The Drill - 'Losing Streak’ Artwork Feature

Birmingham pop punk quintet You Know The Drill recently announced their debut EP Losing Streak, which is due out October 28th. It will be available digitally and physically via Scylla Records. They recently shared a track by track for the EP and today they are sharing more about the artwork. Read what they had to say below.

Vocalist Benji Yapp explains of the forthcoming EP’s title: “We felt it was relevant - it relates to the hard times in life that everyone goes through, where it just seems to be one bad thing after another.” But You Know The Drill aren’t all doom and gloom, the band – completed by Damo Darby on Bass, Brad Potter on Drums and guitarists Jim McCormack & Luke Astley – have a simple mantra: “if it isn’t fun then what’s the point?”. The EP is batting for the rafters, with their energy laden guitar and drum attack and vocal hooks left, right and centre, on their big-room-ready choruses. Ahead of the EP’s release on the 28th October, the band discuss the creation of it’s artwork…

For our artwork we were lucky enough to have Neck Deep's very own Fil Thorpe-Evans illustrate for us! We chose Fil as we were all extremely impressed with some of the show posters he'd made for Neck Deep in the past and we were all a fan of his art style. When we approached him about the piece, we had no pre-conceived ideas about what we wanted the cover to look like, we just knew we wanted the E.P to be called 'Losing Streak' and he ran with it, coming up with a concept almost straight away.

When he first came back to us, we were initially shocked by the watercolour style of it, as it was unexpected – but it grew on us almost immediately. The first draft had the pink guy, who we've named Barney, knelt on the ground with his hand in a black hole in the floor; this draft also only featured two ghosts. We ultimately decided that it would look cooler if he was sat on the edge of the cliff looking glum.

It ties in with the theme of the E.P in so many ways, from the name alone you can tell that Barney himself is on a bit of a "Losing Streak" and the demons are definitely representative of the struggles and hard times of life creeping up on him. It's funny because a while back Fil did an interview regarding his art and in this happened to discuss our artwork. However as nothing had been announced yet, he couldn't mention us by name or show off the artwork, so it's cool now to be able to tell people reading it, "That's us he's talking about! That's our EP cover!". Feel free to check out what he said of it here.”
