Captain Murphy - "Crowned" (Song Review)

It's been a while since we've heard new music from Captain Murphy (aka Flying Lotus). I was excited to hear that he had teamed up with Adult Swim for the release of this new single "Crowned". The beat for the song is really good and captures the vibe I think he was going for perfectly. It is eerie and brooding. The keys have an organ sounding effect that kind of resembles a boat horn being blown out over a foggy and eerie swamp. Lotus raps pretty similar to his previous Captain Murphy material. He uses down tuned rapping that creates a somewhat menacing feel. He down tunes his rap similar to what we heard in early Tyler, The Creator songs. There are some moments of what sounds like clean rapping here and there in the song, but the down tuned rapping takes center stage. The rapping coupled with the beat creates a Halloween-esque feel. The song itself is perfect for this time of the year as we move into fall and Halloween. It is another strong statement of why the Captain Murphy alias is so successful in tone and vibe. Flying Lotus is able to pretty much nail everything he wanted to in this fairly short song. The MF Doom meets early Odd Future meets Flying Lotus mixture is so successful. It makes me kind of cross my fingers with anticipation hoping we'll hear a full length album from the project sooner than later. This is a cool song. Since the debut of Captain Murphy we haven't heard enough from this project, in my opinion, but what we have has all been high quality. I think this song is another great addition to the project. Check this one out!
