The Weekend Classic - 'When You Had Nothing' (Quick Review)

The Weekend Classic comes through with one of the more refreshing pop/punk EPs from a newer band this year. Pop/punk has felt slightly complacent for me this year. However, I absolutely thought Blink-182 came through with one of the best albums this year and I have enjoyed some albums/EPs from various other artists. Nonetheless, some albums either haven't lived up to the hype or pop/punk has just felt a little stagnant for me. The Weekend Classic's new EP When You Had Nothing has injected a big boost of well needed pop/punk energy in my ears. After a couple EPs, this release feels like the band is getting a little more solid and fine tuned with their songwriting. Their previous work is good, but these songs are a notch above their previous songs, in my opinion, in terms of songwriting and production. This three song EP has a fire in it that reminds me of some of the earlier releases from artists like Knuckle Puck and Real Friends. Joe Taylor (Knuckle Puck) also guests on the EPs first song "Tethered" and it's one of the better pop/punk songs I've heard in a while. It has some nice, fast guitars kicking off the song and I'm a big fan of both the lyrics and the vocal performance. It has a nice energy to it while taking some time for some slower melodic parts within the song. The band has moved up my list of possible next big things for the pop/punk scene with this EP. As the warm summer weather kind of winds down this EP is a nice boost of solid, fun, youthful summer energy. I would highly recommend this one.
