HUNNY - Sound In The Signals Interview
I recently had the chance to interview HUNNY. We discussed their new song "Colder Parts", the upcoming tour with Beach Slang, and what got them interested in music. Check out the full interview below!
First off, thanks for the interview.
No worries.
For anyone not familiar with HUNNY how did you get together and what got you into music?
Jake Munk: We've all played music since we were young, playing in various different bands in high school. We started HUNNY as two of our old bands were breaking up. Our bands had played shows together for a while, and we'd always admired each other. So it felt natural to start a new band when those two ended.
You are going to be doing some shows with Bleached and Beach Slang. How did it work out for you to be on those shows?
Jason Yarger: We've always wanted to play with them and we talked about it a bit at SXSW when we were hanging with them. When that tour popped up, I just asked Jen if they had someone in mind to open and for some stupid reason they thought it'd be fun to take us out so now we're on it. We're just tryna put on for the 818.
What can fans expect for the performance and set list of those shows? Do you have any surprises you are working on?
Jason: We're stoked for these ones cuz we get to play a short set. We haven't been able to do that since the flood tour. we love going up and just blasting out a half hour. We're working on a set list right now that's a little different than what we've been doing so far this year.
You just released your song "Colder Parts" and I'm really liking it. Can you tell me a little about the writing and recording process of the song?
JM: Thank you! We wrote the initial idea for "Colder Parts" at the end of last year. We kicked around the idea for a little while and spent a couple months fine tuning it and deciding on the direction we wanted to take it. In February of this year, we took it into Palmquist Studios where we produced and engineered it ourselves along with "Vowels." We were in there for 3 days in between a couple of short tours, and used almost every bit of our time there. The sense of urgency we felt due to the short timeline really made us work harder than we ever have, and I think we're all really proud of the end result.
The song was premiered on Zane Lowe's show and he's praised the song and the band. What is it like getting that high praise? Overall, have you been pleased with the response to the song from critics and listeners?
JM: The response to the song has been awesome. It's just exciting to finally put it out after we'd been sitting on it for nearly a year. Getting it premiered with Zane Lowe was pretty surreal. We've all respected him and his shows for a long time, so it was insane to hear such kind words about "Colder Parts" from him.
What was the lyrical inspiration for the song?
Jason: Can't answer this, sorry. it's way too much fun watching people try to decipher my lyrics on this one. I'll tell you that no one has gotten too close yet. Use your imagination.
What else do you have coming up for the remainder of 2016?
JM: We're always writing. After our tour in the fall with Bleached and Beach Slang, we're going to get to work on a release for next year.
I guess that wraps it up. Thanks for answering the questions. Do you have anything else you would like to add?
JM: Do doot do loot do!
