Big Makk - 'The Makk Tape' (Review)

First off, I have nothing bad to say about these eight tracks. Not one single thing. Considering the circumstances around this release and the death of Big Makk, I would never write a review for an artist under these circumstances if 1. I didn't enjoy the release and want to spread the music and if 2. I couldn't do it without the utmost respect for the artist. I went into this wanting to review this project and really talk about all the highlights, great structures, and songs so with that being said I was both excited to hear this release but very saddened to hear of Big Makk's passing.

I was familiar with Makk prior to the release of The Makk Tape. His remix of “Tip Toe Wing in My Jawwdinz” with Mr. Carmack was really neat and very inventive. The Makk Tape stands, in my opinion, as an opus to a great up and coming DJ/producer. The eight tracks are extremely well done. I enjoy how the release has dance-able moments, but also finds time to experiment with sounds, structure, and vibes. "Beachside" has these noises that evoke sunshine and has a rippling sound in the song that makes one imagine an image of waves rolling onto the shore. It's quite possibly my favorite song on the release. "Libdam" feels like the kind of song you could jump on your bike or the bus and just ride along to while looking around at the city. It's smooth and adventurous sounding and it's a big standout on the release. "Love Lost" is such a somber song that builds slightly but moves along like a smooth summer day. It has a great flow and vibe.

The Makk Tape is something that I think any music fan should check out this year. It's a testament to an artist that was taken away too soon and it's a body of work that I think will stand the test of time for the genre. Its impressive and intelligent production is something any artist should aspire to reach. This is a release that I truly enjoyed listening to and I appreciate the opportunity to get to hear it. I'm glad this came out. I give this a high recommendation and urge everyone to give it a listen.
