Where There's Life - Sound In The Signals Interview
Edinburgh's Where There's Life all have a passion for music and enjoy writing songs that blur the line between pop punk/rock and heavier music. They just released their latest single "Bright" via Scylla Records. They were kind enough to tell us about how the relaxed, diy atmosphere of recording their 2015 EP brought the group together and let them find their sound, how the video for "Bright" reminds them of their first tour, and about a time they played out of a van for fans who were turned away from the venue due to age restrictions.
Where There's Life is a heavy pop-punk band from Edinburgh. You've just released your latest single. Tell us about your background and music for those who may be unfamiliar.
We're 5 five friends from around Edinburgh that all have a massive passion for music and through that we all kind of gravitated towards one another and met through various different bands. When you meet people that have a lot of drive and a lot of ambition to do similar things that you want to, it makes a lot of sense to work together and make something cool. Alongside being fans of pop punk/rock we all enjoy heavier music too and we felt it would be more fun to let ourselves write songs on either end of that spectrum and some songs that blur the line. We try our best to keep the tracks catchy and upbeat but also to have the energy and hard hitting moments that we love in the heavier music we like.
You released your debut self-titled EP in 2015. I've read that it was recorded in your guitarist's bedroom. Tell us about writing and recording this EP.
Recording the EP by ourselves in Dann's bedroom was great. Some of us didn't know each other a lot at the time and it allowed us to have so much time to get to know one another and gel together as a group. Being in control of every aspect of the process just let us completely relax and move at our own pace, which meant we had a lot of time to find the sound that everyone wanted for the band and we could get the right compromise of everyone's musical influences. It's a big responsibility and a lot of hard work to do something like that completely on our own from start to finish and the fact that everyone pulled together to do it was a really great experience and accomplishment for us as a group!
You just released your latest single "Bright" via Scylla Records. You released a compilation video featuring live footage and footage of the band. How did you choose the footage for the video? What inspired the idea?
The idea for the video was just to try and capture as much of the energy that we have when we play live shows as we could. The track is really upbeat and positive and we were hoping that the fun, fast paced vibe of the video would reflect that. It's also great for people that have maybe heard our tracks but haven't had a chance to see us live, it gives them an idea of what to expect and hopefully shows that our live shows are a lot of fun! Also it's great for us personally because it features a lot of cool footage from our first tour and that was such an amazing experience for all of us, so on a much more personal level it's just so great to be able to watch the video and see so many of the awesome memories that we made.
Speaking of "Bright", it has a neat message. Tell us more about what the song means to you and what you hope fans take away from the song.
The track is really about acknowledging that while life might not be perfect and everyone has their own troubles to deal with, it's important to maintain a positive outlook and not lose sight of all the great things that we can often overlook and take for granted while we're dealing with our problems. Nothing will ever be perfect and things in life will always change, sometimes not in the way you'd like them to, but we hope the song can help people get through those tough times and remind them that there's always some good to be found in bad situations, you just have to take things head on, be confident in yourself and keep making the most of life. We're big on hopeful vibes.
You played your home town with Napoleon on Tuesday, August 9th at Studio 24. What can fans look forward to during a live show? How do you prepare before playing?
We are extremely excited to play with Napoleon, we're all big fans and getting to share a stage (or floor show) with them is beyond cool. As for our live show and how we prepare, we just want to bring as much energy as possible to the set. With the release of Bright we've been able to move some songs around in the set and it's always fun for us to do that, it keeps it fresh and it's fun trying out new ways to make songs flow together to give the set a good dynamic. We just want people to come down and sing along with us and jump around and generally have fun, the show is theirs as much as it is ours and we're all there for the same reason, we just want to have a good time.
You shared a photo from Glasgow when you played acoustic songs from inside your van for fans. This was probably a much different show than usual shows. Tell us about this experience.
The acoustic set in the van was great! We were playing at Flat 0/1 in Glasgow and a few groups of younger fans had come along but were turned away because of age restrictions. We were all gutted, for people to travel any distance and spend their time and money to come watch the show was insane for us and we couldn't let them leave empty handed so we played a few songs in the back of the van for them. Any support for the band is incredible, seeing people so excited and supportive about something that means so much to you is a great feeling and we just wanted those people to know how much we appreciated it. It was great getting to meet them and it's something I think we'll all remember for a long time.
What's next for Where There's Life? How can fans keep up with what's going on with the band?
Our plan for the rest of the year is to try and get back down to England/Wales to play some more shows. The scene in England is massive right now and we'd love to be more involved in that, there are a lot of great bands that we're friends with and we'd love to get back down and play some more shows with them. We're also already writing for our second EP and that will be taking up a big part of the later months of this year, we don't want to give away too much but we're definitely working on more new stuff already. People can keep up to date on our Facebook (www.facebook.com/wherethereslifeband) or follow us on Twitter and Instagram (@WTL_Band). Anything that we have going on will be posted all over them and there's a good chance we'll be dropping some work in progress videos while we work on EP number 2. Check them out!
Thanks for the interview. Do you have anything else you would like to add?
You're more than welcome, the questions have been great! All we have to say is thank you to everyone that's helped with the release of Bright everyone that has taken the time to check it out and been so supportive. If you haven't heard it then download a copy and come hear it live at Studio 24 in Edinburgh on Tuesday!
