Third Place - Sound In The Signals Interview

Montreal QC-based quartet Third Place started as a garage band, but they decided in 2008 that they would take it more seriously. They released the self-produced demo, Keep Your Dream Alive in 2008 and their album Lifeland in 2010. They are releasing their new EP, Rise of Chaos on Friday, August 12th. They were kind enough to tell us more about the concept behind the rise of King Chaos, how the cover artwork was inspired by an unreleased video clip, and what's next for the band after the release.

Third Place formed in 2008 and has gone through a few members. Tell us more about your background and music for those who may be unfamiliar.

Francis met our old drummer "David Lane" when he was studying music in college. 5 years later David decided to quit the band because of personal reasons. Vincent Côté became the new drummer in 2011. At the end of 2014, Vincent decided to persue his career as a producer and recording engineer. We are still best friends anyway! Steven Cope became the new drummer and he's a part of our family!

You're going to release your new EP Rise of Chaos on August 12th. You've said "Rise of Chaos is the story of King Chaos! It’s a short resume about his upbringing and how he became a Villain". Tell us more about this concept.

In our last album "lifeland" we wrote a song about a super hero named Johnny Crypto. In the song he fights and looses against his arch enemy King Chaos. So we thought it would be interesting to elaborate more on how he became so evil.

Bassist/vocalist Corey Shane Parkinson said "this EP was a very different process than the last album. We ruled a NO BARRIERS process and made sure to go with the flow. We wrote 24 demos and with help from our producer Luc Tellier we picked six to become songs...hard decisions but were positive we made the right song choices". You changed drummers during the process. What else made this a different process?

Something that made this production different was we changed producers since the last album. Everybody works a bit differently, there's so much to learn when you go into studio so we like to switch it up.

You recently released "Temptation" from the EP. It does have a relatable message. How important is it to relate to your fans? What do you hope they get from this song and your music, in general?

Its very important to relate to your fans. I mean we didn't write Temptation to relate to our fans but the song took off on its own. Everyone has a weakness and struggle and I think Temptation reminds them that they are not alone.

The cover artwork is very interesting. Who came up with the design and what does it represent? How was it created?

I came up with the artwork for "Rise of Chaos", drawing sketches and trying different things. The reason why we kept this particular artwork was because we were inspired from a video clip we never released (Johnny Crypto). We also included emblems for each song which are sewed to the kings jacket. Every song has one.

I've read that you pride yourselves on your theatrical shows. What can fans expect at a show? What makes it a good show for the band?

We give off a lot of energy... We also have little skits between songs, overall we like a well-rounded show and of course, we love playing.

The EP comes out on August 12th. Any teases for fans who are waiting for it? What's next after the release?

We are going to tour as much as we can, we played in Canada and in the Usa this year, hopefully, we'll get to play in Europe!

Thanks for the interview. Do you have anything else you would like to add?

Akounamatata!!
