Like Ships - Sound In The Signals Interview
I recently had the chance to interview Like Ships. We discussed their upcoming EP Turn Off The Lights, how they formed the band, their single "Skylines", and more. Check out the full interview after the jump!
First off, thanks for the interview.
Thank you, appreciate the chance to reach out to a larger audience and discuss what we are doing and to spread the word.
For anybody not familiar with Like Ships. How did the project start and what made you want to form it?
I grew up in the Seattle area listening to punk and pop punk music. I love it, but I realized the songs that meant the most to me were not the big loud hits, but often times the acoustic track at the end of the album . Those are the songs that got me through a lot when I was younger, and meant the most to me. Those are the kinds of songs I want to write, and that we want to play . We don't hear enough of those kinds of genuine songs, We hope these songs will mean as much to people as they do to us.
Your new EP Turn Off The Lights is out at the end of August. What was the recording and writing process like for the EP? How long did you work on it?
I've been writing songs for about 10 years but never really released any of them, until this year . It's been a great experience and a good reception. Most of these songs were written between November of last year and April of this year. Choosing songs was the hardest part. I wanted it to reflect the appropriate style, message, and sound. When I decided I wanted to do this I reached out to Mike Herrera of MXPX and he set me up with time in his studio and I worked with an awesome producer named Bradly Miranda . I learned a ton about recording since I had no real background, and We recorded it all in 2 days, and we later added 2 live bonus tracks.
You released the first track "Skyline" and I really like the vocal performance on the song. How long did you work on the vocals and what was the overall writing process like for this song in particular?
Honestly, the best songs are often the easiest to write , because they aren't forced. The song was written in a short period of time last fall, and revised a couple times since but still essentially the same song.
Like I mentioned before, we recorded it all in 2 days, so only 1/2 a day total was spent on skyline, instruments and all.
I like the EP artwork; it's a neat visual. Who came up with the concept for it and why did you decide to use the image as the artwork?
Originally I asked a local artist in Seattle to come up with a concept, but had a hard time working that out so i made the graphic design for the image myself. We made a handful of mock ups and I had some people help me make a final decision. It's simple and turned out really nicely, which is what we wanted. It's interesting, depending on who you ask it's either people swimming, or people drowning. I think that's cool, and your view of it almost says more about the you than the art itself. I love that .
What do you have coming up for the remainder of 2016 after you release the EP?
We just did a radio show in Seattle and live performance on the air to promote the EP, and our first real show is August 27th opening up for "Bowling For Soup" in Spokane Washington.
From there we are hopeful, and looking forward to playing more venues in an effort to get more exposure. I think once people get to hear us we will continue to grow in support.
I guess that wraps it up. Thanks for taking the time to answer the questions. Do you have anything else you would like to add?
Thank you so much! Awesome to get this opportunity, everyone should listen to us on likeships.bandcamp.com and order the EP, and stay up to date on our Facebook page, Facebook.com/likeships/
