Alex Rodriguez Announced Retirement
Alex Rodriguez announced that he will play his final game on August 12th against the Tampa Bay Rays. The 14-time All Star says he plans to retire and then return to become a special adviser and instructor for the New York Yankees through December 31, 2017. He will be released from his contract and will receive the money still owed to him. He currently sits at 696 home runs, fourth on the all-time homer list. Will he manage to break 700 by Friday? Many are still upset with him over his 2013 admission that he had used performance-enchancing drugs.
He said, "no athlete ever ends his or her career the way you want to. We all want to play forever. But it doesn't work that way. Accepting the end gracefully is part of being a professional athlete. Saying goodbye may be the hardest part of the job, but that's what I'm doing today".
Teammate Mark Teixeira announced his retirement on Friday.
