Game of Thrones Will End After Season 8
HBO confirmed that season 8 will be the last for Game of Thrones. Showrunners David Benioff and Dan Weiss have often said they plan to end it after season 8 and this was confirmed at the Television Critics Association’s press tour in Beverly Hills when HBO programming president Casey Bloys said that this is the current plan. Bloys said he would welcome as many seasons as they would offer, but he is following their vision for the show.
This announcement comes after the enormous views last season and being ranked as one of TV's most watched shows. Last season deviated from the popular book series, but fans have largely enjoyed the direction. Bloys said he would be open to a spin-off if the showrunners could see a future in that, but they are currently tied up with planning the upcoming season 7. This also comes after the news that season 7 will premiere later than usual, starting in summer 2017 instead of the spring. They plan to do this so they can take advantage of filming locations and the changing of the weather. Season 7 will also be reduced to 7 episodes instead of the usual 10.
