Chapter And Verse - Sound In The Signals Interview
London-based Chapter And Verse, an alt-rock quartet, have been hard at work over the past year and officially launched at a sold out Black Heart show. Known for their relentless tour ethic, they're already getting comparisons to bands like Circa Survive, Crooks UK, and Saosin. They are about to release their debut EP, The Wolves Back Home next week. They were kind enough to explain the concept behind the title and cover art, how filming the "Slave" video was a serendipitous event, and the routines they have before each show.
You're growing your fan base and creating your own unique take on alt-rock as you prepare to release your debut EP. Can you tell us a bit about your background and music for those who may be unfamiliar?
Thanks for having us! Sure. We’re an Alt-Rock Quartet from East London making a ruckus to the tune of heartfelt, personal stories and reflections.
Your debut EP, The Wolves Back Home is set for release on July 15th. That's a neat title and unique cover art. How did you come up with the title and that design?
Thank you. The name comes from the song ‘The New Breed’ which talks of a man fleeing his colony and taking a look back at the corrupted people he left behind. The cover art was inspired by the title but is also linked with some of the ideas from other tunes. They talk of being stabbed in the back and let down by people close to you. We wanted it to have multiple connotations whilst being really bold and clearly linked to the title, so we got some mates together and shot it in our mate’s living room!
We got a good glimpse into the EP with "Shelf Life" which you released in March and "Slave" which you recently released. We're liking what we've heard so far. Walk us through an average day when you were writing and recording.
It’s pretty random really! Sometimes one of us will come in with a pretty solid idea of a song structure. Other times someone would just have a riff or a concept or whatever and we’ll all work it out from there. When starting up the band we agreed that we’ll just create noise that we like and coat in lyrics we feel strongly about. So there’s never any preconceptions to the song writing. Having said that we write a lot and bin a lot, so after we’re done experimenting we’ll just try and objectively decide which ones are the best one and then go back to do all the fine tuning.
"Slave" has a neat, conceptualized video. Can you tell us a bit about the idea behind it? Do you have any fun video shoot stories or anything you can add about creating it?
The video was a bit of a serendipitous event. The song is about going with your gut and ignoring the pessimism around you to get where you want to be. It just so happened that our friend Craig Bingham was directing a documentary that was a look into the life of MMA fighter Danny Mitchell and didn’t have the right outlet to release it on. The stories matched so well that they just had to be put together. We shot the band section with him and then spent a few days in the edit with him making it all work together.
The band sold out your first show ever and you've been playing many shows since. I read a very positive review of your performance at Camden Rocks. What was that experience like?
Yeah, we couldn’t believe it! The first show was mental. People were so excited and supportive, it really blew us away. Then getting booked up for Camden Rocks was icing on the cake! We played The Monarch and again it was just awesome. We met so many good people and so many good bands. It really is an incredible day both for bands and audience members.
You'll be headlining the Old Blue Last in London on July 13th to celebrate the release. Do you have any routines that you do prior to playing that get you ready? How do you recharge after a long time on the road?
I (Josh) definitely do a good warm up before shows. My vocal is so up and down the range that I need to. We ALWAYS do cheeky fist bumps and stuff before playing. Now that we’ve done it at every show, I feel like we need to do it or the set might not work… You never know haha.
Not sure about recharging… We just kinda get on with things. We all love touring so much that it’s more about dealing with post-tour-blues than recharging.
You will be on tour in July leading up to the release. Can you tease anything that is coming soon? How can fans keep up with what's going on with the band?
Social media’s the best way. I’ve just taken up twitter… And I’m rubbish at it… So I might slip up and tease something by accident. Give us a follow and who knows what you might find out! I’d like to tell you something really edgy and original but in honesty the best way is Facebook… When we’ve sorted out advertising helicopters and stuff, I’ll be sure to let you know first.
Thanks for the interview. Do you have anything else you would like to add?
Thanks for having us! ‘Slave’ is out now and the EP’s coming soon, so keep an eye out! Much love.
