Sony Pictures Animation - Upcoming Films & TV Series Through 2018
Sony Pictures Animation announced their upcoming features through 2018. They will produce five theatrical movies, three TV series, and one direct-to-video movie. Did you miss the upcoming films expected from Pixar?
President of Sony Pictures Animation, Kristine Belson said, "we are meaningfully stepping up our level of production, while creating an environment that fosters the best talent. Our goal is to enlarge our presence in the animation landscape with a uniquely diverse slate, and our strategy to get there is to let artists drive the movies creatively."
Theatrical Movies
Smurfs: The Lost Village - This will be an animated comedy following the Smurfs. It's supposed to be a return to the tone and style of the classic comic book creations. Kelly Asbury (Shrek 2, Gnomeo & Juliet) is directing and Jordan Kerner (The Smurfs 1 & 2, Charlotte's Web) is producing along with co-producer Mary Ellen Bauder Andrews (Hotel Transylvania). Demi Lovato voices Smurfette, Jack McBrayer voices Clumsy, Joe Manganiello voices Hefty, Danny Pudi voices Brainy, Rainn Wilson voices Gargamel, and Mandy Patinkin voices Papa. It is expected out on April 7, 2017.
Emojimovie: Express Yourself - This will be about the secret and surprising life of the emojis. It is expected to come out in August 2017.
The Star - (This is the working title). Oscar nominee Timothy Reckart (Head Over Heels) will direct. It's the story of a small but brave donkey and his animal friends and their part in the first Christmas. It's a Sony Pictures Animation and The Jim Henson Company production. It is expected to come out December 8, 2017.
Hotel Transylvania 3 - Genndy Tartakovsky (Dexter's Laboratory, Star Wars: Clone Wars) will direct. Adam Sandler is executive producing. Adam Sandler, Selena Gomez, and Andy Samberg will return as the voices of Dracula, Mavis, and Johnny. It is expected to come out on September 21, 2018.
Unnamed Spider-Man Film - The creators behind The Lego Movie, Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, will bring this story to life. It's an animated Spider-Man movie. It's expected to debut on December 21, 2018.
Animated TV Series
Ghostbusters: Ecto Force - This will expand on the Ghostbusters cinematic universe and focus on a new generation of Ghostbusters in 2050. Local teams help them capture ghosts all over the world.Ivan Reitman and his production company Ghost Corps are part of this project. This may debut in early 2018.
Hotel Transylvania: The Television Series - The Disney Channel animated series will focus on the teenage years of Mavis, Dracula's daughter. This should debut in 2017.
Cloudy with A Chance of Meatballs - The Cartoon Network 2D animated series will expand on the adventures from the films. This should debut in 2017.
Direct-To-Video Movie
Surf's Up 2: Wavemania - This is the follow-up to the 2007 Oscar nominee film and is in celebration of the ten year anniversary. WWE Superstars John Cena, The Undertaker, Triple H, Diva Paige, and Mr. McMahon will voice the characters. They will play the infamous big wave riding crew of penguins known as The Hang 5. They want to find the biggest waves in the world. This is expected to debut in the Spring of 2017.
