Netflix - Announces First Original Sports Documentary Series, "Last Chance U"

Netflix announced that they will be launching their first original sports documentary series, Last Chance U. It will be a six-part documentary series exclusive to Netflix members worldwide. Greg Whiteley (Mitt, New York Doll, Resolved) will direct. Last Chance U is a behind-the-scenes look at the culture of college football. It will follow a group of young athletes who hope to join the NFL. They are the latest recruits to East Mississippi Community College, an undefeated team with 3 National Championship wins. Some of the athletes have been held back by academic and/or behavioral issues. The series hopes to capture the real players behind the helmets as they struggle with their challenges and are on the brink of success.

Whiteley says when "considering the school’s recent success, and after meeting some of the people from Scooba, Mississippi, we felt that chances were high that we would be filming one of those special seasons. What we ended up capturing was something none of us could've ever predicted."

Lisa Nishimura, Netflix VP of Original Documentary Programming says that Whiteley "brings an honest and intimate lens to all his subjects, immediately creating a connection between the viewer and these young, complex subjects. You are invited into their world and feel immediately invested in the high stakes of their lives."

Last Chance U premieres July 29th.
