Netflix Acquires "The Discovery" For 2017 Premiere

Netflix announced that the company acquired the global rights to Charlie McDowell's The Discovery. It premiered at the 2014 Sundance Film Festival to much approval from critics. It stars Rooney Mara (Carol, The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo), Robert Redford (Truth), and Jason Segel (The End of the Tour, How I Met Your Mother). The film also features Jesse Plemons (Friday Night Lights, Breaking Bad), Riley Keough (American Honey, The Girlfriend Experience), and Ron Canada (The Strain).

McDowell (The One I Love, Silicon Valley) directed and co wrote the film with Justin Lader. It's a "gripping love story set one year after the existence of the afterlife is scientifically verified. Redford plays the scientist responsible for the discovery, with Segel portraying his son Will and Mara playing Isla, a woman haunted by a tragic past who Will falls in love with".

It joins the growing list of Netflix original films including The Fundamentals of Caring, starring Paul Rudd, Craig Roberts, and Selena Gomez which premieres on June 24th. The Discovery will premiere on Netflix and in select theaters in 2017.
