Post Malone - White Iverson (Single Review)
I always note when I write single reviews because I don't write them often. I just don't feel compelled to write single song reviews very much. I usually just tweet out a recommendation for the song. However, when I do write a review it's kind of a special occasion. Post Malone dropped the song "White Iverson" basically out of the blue. He's fairly unknown, has one other song on his soundcloud page, and at the time of the song drop had less than 500 followers on twitter. I'm a huge Iverson fan so the title and single artwork caught my eye. "White Iverson" is R&B in the vein of Frank Ocean, The Weeknd, Banks, and PARTYNEXTDOOR!. I've heard so many artists trying to pull it off, but very few artists can hit you with a song that feels as good as some of those artists earlier songs. When I heard Frank Ocean's "Novacane" or The Weeknd's "Wicked Games" those songs felt like huge events for this now popularized R&B style. I think what makes "White Iverson" so great is for the first time in a couple years someone was able to capture the excitement I had when I originally heard songs like those. It does a great job at being really laid back, slightly dreamy sounding, and extremely catchy. The lyrics have some really interesting moments. They may not have the most lyrical depth, but they play on the style really well. I could easily believe Post Malone is influenced by The Weeknd's lyrical style based on the lyrics. I'm crossing my fingers and hoping that Post Malone drops a mixtape, EP, or album sometime soon. This is a really neat song and worth checking out.
