Talking Music: Any Song/Any Era/Any Genre (January 2015)

Last year this feature was used to talk about albums. This year I'm taking it in a slightly different direction. This year I will be talking about songs with this feature. Each month I will pick one song, discuss it, try to provide a stream of the song, and include the lyrics. This month I discuss ThouShaltNot's song "When I Crash". Check it out after the jump.

I've been going back and listening to ThouShaltNot's entire discography and I decided for the first Talking Music song feature I'd pick the song "When I Crash". It's the first song from the band's 2006 album Land Dispute. ThouShaltNot are known for mixing classical elements with darkwave and synthpop while teetering at times on doom and gloom sounds. However, "When I Crash" has an immediately ear pleasing vibe that literally crashes into this really interesting mish mash of sounds. All the while the song still maintains a really ear pleasing vocal element. For comparisons sake I guess the vocals have somewhat of a similar vibe to the early works of The Cure. I think the almost alternative rock/pop sung vocals are well done and just tie this song together in a really neat way. The lyrics aren't necessarily grim, but they definitely have edge to them which is interesting. The music creates an almost abrasive "crashing" together which is also really interesting. Land Dispute as a whole album is neat and "When I Crash" is one of my favorite songs from this band. Check it out!

Lyrics:
She fell asleep before she got inside from on the road
As devils drove around her at a thousand miles an hour
The dreams of lazy wishing and of promises bestowed
Were just enough to give her hands unlikely guiding power

From left and right the silent witness watched her as she flew
No cage around her body to protect her from the world
A lover in the form of barriers that quickly grew
Embraced her as a lover would embrace his wedding girl

With glass he kissed her on the lips the wishing-dreams now changed
To hyperactive craving beyond wishing known on Earth
The gravitation of her slow desire rearranged
The planets and the insects and the wealthy demons' worth

And in that half a second that she finally had her want
Not waking, she was like a queen above the summer tar
With dream-built sceptre to her side and fools there to her front
She grinned, that falling empress for the fifteen meters far
