Fat Heaven - Sound In The Signals Interview
I recently had the chance to interview Fat Heaven. Check out the full interview after the jump.
For anyone not familiar with your band how did you guys get into music and get together to form Fat Heaven?
Two of us (Gayla and Travis) went to school in the city together. After getting paired up as project partners to record a song (because we couldn’t find anyone else who would work with us) we started jamming all the time. As we wanted to play shows we asked around to find people to play bass with and luckily our friend recommended us Jack “The Counce” which he hates being called by the way.
Your self-titled EP is out in February. Can you tell me a little about the recording process and how long you worked on the EP?
We actually recorded the EP twice. We recorded it ourselves the first time in a school studio with just us two (Gayla and Travis) tracking things individually. As we were almost done with the 4 songs and we got this rad offer to record for a day in the Converse Rubber Tracks studio in Brooklyn. At Rubber Tracks we initially were only going to record “Night of the Dead” and this time have Jack on bass, playing it live straight through instead of individually tracking things to a click. But we finished tracking “Night of the Dead” in about an hour and our engineer, Aaron Bastinelli, made it sound so good that we knew we had to just rerecord the entire EP while we were there. By the end of the 7 hour day, we finished the 4 songs that make up this EP.
"Night Of The Dead" has been released for stream. To me it has some of those old school Misfits vibes to it. Is that track a good representation of the sound of the overall sound of the EP?
Yea definitely. There's a consistent energy on the album but that one by far is our most misfits influenced. We wanted to write songs that you can lose your shit to live. All the songs on this ep are about 2 minutes long (gotta squeeze 4 songs on a 7” somehow right?)
How big of an influence, if at all, are the Misfits on your music? What did you look to for inspiration while working on the upcoming EP?
Quite a huge influence. “Night of the Dead” is practically our tribute to them. For additional inspiration we listened to a lot of FIDLAR, Rancid, Diarrhea Planet and obviously a ton of The Misfits (From Danzig to Graves) when recording. Other things we found inspirational include: dogs, Tony Hawk Pro Skater, girls, drugs, hockey, cats, and violence.
Chisel Records is pressing the EP on vinyl. What can fans expect from the vinyl pressing of the EP?
We are stoked about the vinyl. Fans can expect not only your standard black 7”, but also limited edition Red and Blue versions, like the original versions of pokémon.
If you had to pick your favorite song off the new EP which one would it be and why?
Travis: Probably “Roxy” since its most different from the rest. Not that different but most different.
Gayla: “LA Girl” because its about killing a really shitty downstairs neighbor, and its the most fun to actually play.
Jack: “Roxy” because I’m a drug addict
I guess that about wraps it up. Thanks for taking the time to answer the questions. Do you have anything else you would like to add?
February 24th the EP will be available everywhere. You can preorder it now through the always lovely Chisel Records. Other than that just catch us playing around New York in the coming months. Thanks for reaching out to us!
