Tigers On Trains - Antarctica In Color (Album Review)
Tigers On Trains should be on your radar. They just should be. The members of the band play double duty in The Republic of Wolves, a band that has also consistently put out good music. The new Tigers On Trains album Antarctica In Color is an album I was really interested to hear. The track "1645" had piqued my interest as being one of the better songs I'd heard in 2014 so I was definitely interested to see what the album as a whole sounded like. I've been a fan of both Tigers On Trains and The Republic Of Wolves for quite a while. So when Antarctica In Color landed in my inbox for review I crossed my fingers hoping it would live up to the hype I had for it.
After a few listens I was ready to make a bold statement about this album. Antarctica In Color is my favorite Tigers On Trains album. The songwriting is so solid, the vocals are so spot on, and this entire album is just massively impressive on all fronts. From the opening percussion part on the first track "Broken Dart" the listener is almost hypnotically brought into the album. It's a neat way to start the album. That song is followed by song after song of insanely well done catchy ear pleasing indie rock/folk. Overall, I think this is a tighter album than the bands previous albums. In some ways certain elements of the album remind me of my favorite parts of older songs by bands like Vampire Weekend. Especially when I think about some of the guitar parts and the way the percussion is used in places. The vocals on this album are massively impressive. That paired with the above average lyrics I, as the listener, just can't find much if anything to complain about.
The album reminds me of when I listened to Days Away's Mapping An Invisible World for the first time in some ways. Not so much in sound, I mean there are definitely similarities, but more so in the feeling I got when hearing this really well done indie rock/folk album that feels just so sunshiney great with great standout vocals and great music. This album brings that same feeling. It just peps me up to hear this album and it's a very elating listening experience.
Overall, you just can't go wrong with this album. It's definitely more of a mellow album, but it's the kind of album that as you listen to it the songs just continue to grow on you. It's hard for me to pick a favorite song off this album. I really enjoy "1645", "Fractioned", "Plumes", and "Broken Dart". Those are a few great songs to start with, but honestly if you're like me with this album every song has a great amount of flair and ear catching ability. This, in my opinion, is the standout best album this band has ever written. Don't miss out on it; it's easily one of the better albums you'll hear in 2014!
