Homebound - Sound In The Signals Interview
I recently had the chance to interview UK pop/punk group Homebound. Check out the full interview after the jump.
You're new EP Coming Of Age is out in July. Can you tell me a little about the writing process of the EP and how long you worked on this EP?
The majority of the release was written over the past year in Tom’s bedroom. Tom would write the skeletons of the tracks and I'd send vocal ideas back and forth. We'd then bring the songs to the band and each pitch in ideas till we were happy with them. Overall we wrote about 11 tracks, and then focussed it down to the final six for the EP. And although it is just an EP, it feels like a hugely satisfying milestone for us. It feels like we have been writing for an eternity.
What made you decide to title the new album Coming Of Age? What does it mean to you guys as a band?
It came about at a time when we all had decisions to make for our future and what was best for us. Might come as a strange time to start writing an EP but in some ways it felt like the best time. I think this release represents a change in ourselves as people and as a band. We've grown up a lot in the last year and I think that's reflected in our song writing.
What do you think your main goal as a band is for this EP and what do you most want listeners to take away from the EP?
It's really just a way to introduce ourselves as a band and what we're about. If people come away from listening to this EP and don't think we suck then that's something. If people dig it enough to show friends then in our minds, we've succeeded.
I've had a chance to listen to the EP and I think my favorite song from it is "Clutching Straw". What inspired that song and what in particular was the song writing process like for it?
It's about not giving up on something you feel passionately about however improbable it might seem. Sometimes you've got to be gutsy and do what's right for you. We wanted an upbeat and positive song on the EP and I think lyrically and instrumentally, that's demonstrated in this song.
Presentation is so important with a band's debut release and I think you guys did a great job getting some really eye catching EP artwork. Who did the artwork for the EP and what made you guys decide to choose it?
We came across Joe at LookHappy Design and explained the EP concept. He drafted all sorts of awesome ideas until we decided on this one that we felt depicted the EP and everything it stood for perfectly. The fear of stepping out into the unknown, filled with a sense of danger and wilderness, having to choose a path to follow. It really grasps the concept.
A couple years ago when the UK pop/punk scene was really starting to make waves a lot of those bands cited American bands as major influences. As more new bands began to surface in the UK and release albums do you think more new bands are starting to draw influences and be influenced more from UK pop/punk groups? Or do you still think more bands are influenced by the American pop/punk scene?
The UK has always struggled to get to grips with Pop Punk. We've never been able to match up close to those across the pond. Neck Deep have really opened everyone's eyes to the possibilities. For us, they have been a massive influence, not just in our music, but in our motivation to do this band.
Are there any pop/punk groups from your area that people haven't heard of yet that you think they should check out?
Unfortunately...no. The Pop Punk scene is practically non-existent where we are. It's sad but it's something we've had to get used to. Not Pop Punk, but Elephantis (MHC) are great.
After the EP is released what else do you have planned for 2014?
Shows, shows and some more shows hopefully. We're bored of sitting around now and just want to go do what we enjoy doing. A new release is definitely on the cards. I wouldn't expect to wait another year for one.
I guess that about wraps it up. Thanks for taking the time to answer the questions. Do you have any closing comments you'd like to make?
Thank you for the feature and thank you to those who have taken the time to read about us lot. Our Debut EP 'Coming of Age' is out 21st July!
