The Analog Affair - Sound In The Signals Interview + Song Stream
I recently had the chance to interview The Analog Affair about their new song "Last Forever". Read the full interview and stream the song via soundcloud after the jump!
How long does it generally take for you to write and a song and what is the first step in the process?
It usually takes us anywhere from 1 - 4 weeks to write a song. Typically Cody will start one off with a basic arrangement then share it with me over Dropbox. I’ll make a few tweaks, write lyrics and then add vocals before sending it back to Cody. There’s a lot of give-and-take in the process and lately we’ve been mixing it up a bit. For example, on Last Forever I came up with the arrangement and had a couple ideas for vocals, then I sent it to Cody to solidify the arrangement, add instruments, make necessary tweaks and then return it to me. Whether or not I start one or Cody starts one, we always work together to make it more cohesive than when it started.
I really like the vibe and feel of the track it has almost a 80's inspired sound mixed with something more current like chillwave. What are some of your influences when you write songs and more sepcifically what influenced "Last Forever"?
On Last Forever, we were influenced by a range of stuff from the ‘nu-disco’ and french house genres to other artists like MGMT, Breakbot, and even Michael Jackson. We really wanted to focus on creating a solid groove that people immediately could move to - and we think it contrasts well with some of our older stuff that is more cerebral in certain ways. We’re big fans/followers of the chillwave genre and thought Last Forever would be a good opportunity to combine the chillwave elements we’ve used in the past with the newer more ‘french touch’ grooves.
If you had to describe this song and your band to someone who hasn't heard your band how would you describe the sound of The Analog Affair?
Wow, that’s a tough question - our sound has evolved so much since we’ve started.. we would say ambient indie pop with electronic and acoustic elements… Damn, that’s tough and probably wouldn’t really help anyone understand our sound more… might just have to bust out an ipod and make them listen instead. Yes it’d be awkward... Awkward but effective.
The artwork for "Last Forever" really matches the vibe of the song well. Who came up with the single artwork and why did you choose it?
Thanks! Doing the album art is secretly one of my favorite parts of making a new track. Aside from working with Cody, I am big into photography and so I have a pretty big collection of photos to pull from when it comes time to create something. The inspiration for Last Forever’s art came from essentially just studying a bunch of other artists album artwork and finding the sweet spot of what I liked about the kind of low-contrast, minimal and abstract styles that’s popular today. I’m glad you mentioned it because I always try hard to make something that represents the song best!
I guess that about wraps it up. Thanks for taking the time to answer the questions. Do you have anything else you would like to add?
We just want to say thanks for listening and helping us get our music out there to people. All of our music is free or pay-what-you-want so we wanna encourage everybody out there to give it a shot and share it with their friends. If we get enough support we can start to get the ball rolling for some live shows!
