Whiskey Myers - Early Morning Shakes (Album Review)
I've been a fan of Whiskey Myers for a while. "Ballad Of A Southern Man" from their 2011 album Firewater is still a song I listen to a lot. The album was solid. Whiskey Myers newest album Early Morning Shakes is a step up and a big statement from the group.
Early Morning Shakes kicks off with the title track and from the get go the band is impressive. "Early Morning Shakes" is a great southern rock song with just the right amount of country twang. It's a fantastic start to the album. It's easily one of the best songs on the album. "Headstone" is a more rock styled song that has a lot of swagger and an impressive vocal performance. "Wild Baby Shake Me" has some fantastic guitar parts. The album's twelve tracks are some of the better southern rock with country tinged songs I've heard in a while. I really like the album lyrically as well. The production and mixing fit the band really well.
The biggest downfall, in my opinion, is that I think the title track is the best song on the album. That’s fine, but since it kicked off the album I was constantly looking for another track to like quite as much. It stuck out as the big gem on the first couple listens. However, having a great introduction to your album isn't much of a downfall. I might have placed the track as # 3 or 4 so the listener doesn’t get the best first. Like I said though that's purely based on opinion and other listeners might have other favorite songs. That also doesn't take away from the songwriting because it is quality. I guess I'm just saying the first track on this album is pretty darn good. Quite possibly my second favorite song the band has ever written (I still think "Ballad Of A Southern Man" is my favorite).
Overall Early Morning Shakes is a batch of extremely well written songs. Yeah, we've heard the sound from artists like the great Lynyrd Skynyrd as well as newer artists like BlackBerry Smoke and Shooter Jennings, but there is no denying this is another great addition to a familiar sound. In fact I'd recommend this to anyone who was a fan of Shooter's album Electric Rodeo. Do yourself a favor and check this one out. It's a great addition to Whiskey Myers discography.
