Thief Club - My Heavy (Album Review)
Hit The Lights has always been a band I've enjoyed. I've liked most of what they've released. It's also no secret that while Invicta was a pretty good album it seemed like it didn't have long legs and the buzz around it didn't last long (which is weird because it's a pretty good album - check it out if you haven't).
I bring up Hit The Lights because Thief Club is Nick Nick Thompson (vocals/guitar) solo project. The nine tracks that make up the album, titled My Heavy, are pretty comparable to Hit The Lights. This is definitely alternative pop/punk. In truth this might have been an even stronger follow-up to Skip School... In any case the songs that make up My Heavy are some of the best songs I've ever heard Nick Nick Thompson sing on. These songs are top notch.
The songwriting is pretty much exactly what you would want from Thompson. The songs have a great vibe, they are a catchy, and lyrically they have a lot of great sing-a-long-able moments and are pretty well written. Like I said this definitely leans towards pop/punk, but fans that lean more towards enjoying alternative pop/rock should be able to enjoy this a lot (when I say alternative pop/rock I'm thinking of bands similar to the sound of something like Go Radio, Valencia, or Jack's Mannequin).
"The First Place" is a standout track on the album that features a piano intro that leads into some guitar riffs that are fairly heavy. Thomas’ vocals sound great on the song. At times he may even remind me a little of Stephen Christian (Anberlin) on this song. "My Heavy" is the title track on the album and it's easily one of the best songs. Will Pugh provides guest vocals on the track and he does a great job. The guitar parts on the song are awesome. It has single potential written all over it. "DMT" is the last song on the album and it feels like a little bit of an odd ball. It's an electronic tinged track that sounds good overall, but feels a little weird as the closer. I guess seeing as this is a side-project it is the perfect place to try stuff like that though.
The guest features are pretty good as well. There are not a ton, but Will Pugh (Cartel) and Shane Henderson (Valencia) show up and their additions to the songs are really fitting. I liked it and thought it added to the album quite a bit.
This album is a great reminder about what you really enjoy about the music Nick Thompson has made both on his own and with Hit The Lights. He's a talented guy who can pen some really good catchy songs. I definitely think if you didn't enjoy the last Hit The Lights album and wanted it to be more in the vein of the first two then this should be right up your alley. There’s no denying it; I really like this album. In fact it might be my favorite thing Nick Thompson has done. Honestly this is just an insanely good album for this type of music.
