Scott H. Biram - Nothin' But Blood (Album Review)
The one thing I really like about albums like Nothin' But Blood is how authentic they sound. The vocals and instruments just sound so tried and true. An album like this is not searching to fit in anywhere. It just wants to be.
Nothin' But Blood has a nice mixture of acoustic somber songs, mixed with some heavier bluesy rock songs, mixed with songs that incorporate punk and hardcore. Biram's vocals sound fantastic. The music written for this album gives the whole underground country scene a big standout album. This is basically one of the standout artists from the genre doing it as well or better than most.
I can't really complain about much on the album. Biram finds a great way to fit in his influences and do some genre jumping while making the album as a whole sound cohesive. "Alcohol Blues" is a standout track that leans a little more on the rock side. It was easily one of my favorites on first listen. "Church Point Girls" is another neat track that takes on more of the punkier side of things. Fans of Hank III's more punk tinged stuff should really like it. "I'm Troubled" is one of the more acoustic based country numbers that fans of the classic country like Johnny Cash should be able to enjoy. "Around The Bend" on the other hand finds itself merging country sounds, punk, and hardcore in a furious way. It’s a really neat song. The album does have a couple eclectic songs that just miss the mark with me a little. "Backdoor Man" is a good song instrumentally, but for some reason I just couldn't get into the way the vocals were done.
It's hard to find really truly good country albums that have those edges of punk and rock that really work. This album is one of those. The album has a ton of different types of things going on. I like seeing the amount of different styles and influences and how Biram really makes them work for the most part. This is a cool album and it’s definitely worth checking out.
