Modern Baseball - You're Gonna Miss It All (Review)

Modern Baseball's debut album Sports was about as good as it could get. It had that instant pop appeal, quirky lyrics, and strong song writing. It was quirky pop/rock with tinges of pop/punk and emo/punk that had a pretty wide appeal for the genre. I really enjoyed it. The follow-up You're Gonna Miss It All is the same in a lot of ways, but it's also a step up for Modern Baseball.

As great as Sports is, and I really do like it, You're Gonna Miss It All takes the song writing and performance found on Sports and then moves it a step forward. There isn't necessarily much different about the two records. The band didn't change up their style much, but instead they found a way to refine it. This album oozes catchy songs. Lyrically, how can you not connect with some of the stuff being said? Even if you don't find the connection it seems like the lyrics are so interesting, quirky, and catchy that you'll at least have to concede to the fact that the lyricist of the band knows how to pen ear catching lyrics. I guess for comparisons sake it's quirky and catchy in a similar way to The Front Bottoms without being totally outrageous. There's a way that the lyrics explore themes of youth, growing up, and heavy feelings mixed with both exciting and mundane events that make for a really interesting and relatable listening experience.

Musically this is a lot like Sports it has some heavy moments and it also has some of those mid-tempo moments, but even those can have a fairly quick pace. "Charlie Black" is a little bit more of a rocker as far as the album is concerned. The placement of the song in the middle of the album is a perfect shot of adrenaline for the middle. The way the guitars sound on this track and the intensity is a little different from anything else on the album. I would have liked to have heard a couple more heavier ones like it. "Rock Bottom" is one of the better songs on first listen. It is a perfect example of what I think the band is able to do so well. I like the lyrics, the music is quick paced but not super heavy, and about thirty seconds in the band throws in a part that sounds like it could have been written by Blink 182 in their pop/punk prime.

At the end of the album you get an awesome listen. Yeah, we've heard artists craft similar albums. In a way this album reminds me of a more refined Mixtapes mixed with The Front Bottoms. I like the indie, emo, and pop/punk elements found in the songs and the band blends all the styles and sounds pretty effortlessly. This is a really fun album and I honestly couldn't have asked for much more. It’s a really good follow-up album and I feel like the band definitely lived up to the hype.
