Shorebreak - Sound In The Signals Interview
I recently had the chance to interview Shorebreak. Check out the full interview after the jump.
For anyone who isn't familiar with your band can you tell me a little about what got you into music and how the band started?
This band started at the bottom, now we’re still at the bottom…but for real the band was started in the summer of 2010, by Mike Cowdell(Guitar) and Nick Montanino(Bass). Originally the band began as a blink-182 cover band that also played Angels and Airwaves and All Time Low. Eventually we acquired Mike Scarola(Vocals) yada yada yada Joe Stewart(Drums) and Tom Vecerina(Guitar) and the rest is history.
Your newest EP Displacement came out this year. What went into the writing process of the EP and how long did it take you to complete it?
The EP was recorded over the course of 5 days at Telegraph Recording in Poughkeepsie, NY with the help of engineer Mike Kalajian. The foundation of the songs are written by Mike Scarola and then taken to the rest of the band and rearranged and finalized.
One song I really liked off the EP was the song "Replacement" what was the song writing process of that song in particular and lyrically where was your head at when you came up with the lyrics?
Replacement was probably the first song we wrote for the new EP and that song much like all the others, was written in the same fashion. I think the lyrics pretty much speak for themselves. The song is mainly about not feeling wanted and needing a way out.
The artwork for the new EP is pretty cool. Who came up with the concept for it and why did you decide that particular image represented the EP the best?
We had all envisioned the idea of a girl dropping a flower into the ocean and Richard Minino helped us to bring that to life in the most beautiful way possible. The girl dropping the flower could be interpreted in a hundred different ways and that’s what we really love about it and how we’d like to leave it.
For anyone who hasn't heard your band what is one song you think would be a good representation of your band and why?
Hmmmm one song that best represents our band? Honestly, I don’t think we can pick just one. Each song off of the new EP depicts a different part of what this band means. You have the poppy song, the angsty songs, the huge anthem song, and the alternative song.
What is coming up for you guys in 2014?
2014 will be all about writing for a full length and hopefully touring in the spring/summer.
I guess that about wraps it up. Thanks for taking the time to answer the questions. Do you have anything else you'd like to add?
Check out our EP ‘Displacement’ and if we play near your city or rural area come out to a show and say hi!
