Bad People - Movement (Album Review)

Movement is the debut album from Kentucky's Bad People. I received an advanced CD copy of this release and I have to say the album layout with the music creates a really cool visual experience. Seeing a gigantic oddly colored eye on the actual CD really sets the mood that you are in for an interesting listen with this album.

Movement is about 99.9% instrumental. Guitarist Jordan Adrian screams one line on the album: "This time I do this for myself." After that point Bad People hit you with a sonic assault of melodic to heavy guitars, pacing drums, and at times groovy bass lines. The riffing on this album easily keeps it entertaining and the rhythm section builds around it really nicely. The band recorded the album at Saint Claire Recording Company (the same place Chiodos recorded Bone Palace Ballet) and it sounds extremely well done. What I really like about this album, that I think is lost with some instrumental music, is that it creates a vibe and flow.

"Reflection Confession" is easily one of my favorite tracks on the album. It's also a good starting place in my opinion. Seeing as it is the only song with lyrics it seems to make a big statement for this album. That one sentence of lyrics is also printed  on the booklet of the album. Another really good track is "War Horse". I like the vibe and mood of the song a lot. It warrants repeated plays. I really like the way the bass guitar was done on "Highest Peaks" as well. A great example of flow, experimentation, and creativity can be found on  "At The Bottom Of The World". It showcases the band in top songwriting form and it's one of the more interesting tracks on the album.

One thing that can't be said enough about the album is that the band has mastered the ability to keep a song extremely entertaining without vocals. The songs have enough things going on and the band builds up and switches moods enough to keep songs really interesting. They've definitely created an album that you can listen to from start to finish and it all encapsulates a really great flow.

This album is really cool, well done, and is definitely worth checking out. If you are a fan of any of the newer instrumental Tides Of Man stuff you should easily be able to get into this. Bad People does a good job at making instrumental rock interesting and keeping the listener enthralled. Check this out you won't be disappointed.
