Why They Came - The Scarecrow (EP Review)

Why They Came's latest release, The Scarecrow EP,  is very Wizard of Oz inspired. From the EP artwork, to the music video, to the EP title, to some of the song titles, and as well as the cover of the song "If I Only Had A Brain" the EP is immersed in Wizard Of Oz nostalgia. The music video itself is a hilarious take on the movie (I'd recommend checking it out if you haven't - it's basically the indie/roots remake of the classic film).

The overall songwriting is really strong throughout. The EP starts with the cover song "If I Only Had A Brain" from the movie Wizard Of Oz. The band does a really great job of making it their own and it's really well done and warrants repeated listens. "Echo 3 To Echo 7" is a Star Wars title inspired song (the band also made a music video for this song but it was Star Wars themed) is another standout track. I really like the pace and build up of the song.

I think one of the best things about the EP is it's 5 songs of quality music. There isn't any filler and you can tell the band put a lot of time into making the strongest set of songs they could for the release. The vocals and instrumentation mesh so well you can tell the chemistry of the band is really good. Andy Barnett gives what I think is his best vocal performance to date. The music provides the backbone and his voice fleshes it out really nicely.

The EP has a great roots and indie rock feeling. It's well produced and mixed nicely. The music and vibe fit this time of the year. This is the first album from Why They Came that features a "solid" full band line-up and the way the songs are fleshed out and the strength of the band really shows this band has found a great chemistry and created one of their most complete efforts to date. Check out this album. I think you'll enjoy it. It is true there is no place like home and Why They Came certainly feel at home on The Scarecrow EP.
