A Loss For Words - Before It Caves (Album Review)

A Loss For Words has become one of the more well known pop/punk bands over the last couple of years. They've been on high profile tours and have been talked about on websites and blogs constantly. Sometimes bands can buckle under the pressure. Before It Caves is a prime example of what happens when a band doesn't buckle. The album is another great addition to A Loss For Words discography.

If you liked A Loss For Words last album, No Sanctuary, you should really enjoy Before It Caves. Before It Caves builds on the past elements and continues to improve them. I think this album may be a little more of a grower. No Sanctuary was enjoyable as soon as I heard it and this one took a few listens to let it sink in. Musically the band does a great job at writing really good catchy songs. Lead vocalist Matty Arsenault continues to impress. The band may get compared to quite a few bands and may be trying to stick out from the pack and if anything helps them it's Aresnault's way-better-than-average vocals. The music is definitely the backbone of the album, but Aresnault keeps the songs standing up straight.

This album has a couple really interesting guest features as well. Soupy from The Wonder Years shows up on the track "Conquest Of Mistakes" and I really like what he brings to the track. Lyn Gunn's appearance on "Distance" sounds really cool too. She really sounds a lot like Hayley Williams from Paramore on the track, but still distinguishes herself. There's a lot of energy on the album while still maintaining a sense of somberness.  The lyrics are good overall. They have a good amount of depth to them which is something I liked a lot about No Sanctuary.

I hope this album isn't lost in the shuffle with so many pop/punk albums being released this year. Sometimes a good album can slip under the radar and it would be a shame if it happened to this album. It really has a lot going for it and anyone who has ever appreciated this band’s music should easily be able to enjoy a ton of the songs found on this album.

While Before This Caves may not beat No Sanctuary's immediate reaction with fans, this album is another solid release from the group. It's been a great year for bands of their genre and it's nice to hear this band can still compete neck and neck as one of the better bands of the genre. Check this out because I think you'll like it.
