Ashestoangels - Sound In The Signals Interview
I recently had the chance to interview Ashestoangels. Check out the full interview after the jump.
To anyone who hasn't heard of your band can you tell me a little about how you guys got started and what got you interested in music?
Crilly: I started this band a long time ago. I would go to gigs and think 'I want that, I can do that'. So I started a band. I'm the only one left from the start. Really we don't consider the band properly beginning until about 2 years ago. That's when we got the right lineup.
Your newest release With Tape And Needles came out not too long ago. That's a really interesting title. How'd you guys come up with and what does it mean?
One of the tracks started out as a much longer song. Nearly six minutes long haha. In the interest of better songwriting it had to be reeled in a little and that meant loosing some of the lyrics. But I really liked the line 'with tape and needles, we can put you back together'. So I kept it. In a way.
You worked with William Control. What did he bring to the table that encouraged you guys to work with him?
William has produced Aiden records and William control records, so he really straddles the electronic/punk thing. Plus we (anti)christened him the gothfather which helped.
His work ethic is great and I love his songwriting so it was much easier for me to take criticism from him.
I can hear a lot of different musical influences in your music. What kind of music inspires you guys and what are one or two bands or genres you think have influenced your sound the most?
We all listen to such a variety of music it's quite hard to pinpoint a couple of bands. I think Aiden and AFI are a big influence, can't really have goth punk without acknowledging the big guns haha. Misfits and Danzig play a big part also. Love Vex Red, they had angst, synths and guitars and they saved me from nu metal when I was a kid. When it comes to writing songs though I'm never thinking about other bands. I just write ashes songs. They sound like us.
Your video for "Wintervention" came out not too long ago. What was it like shooting the video and who came up with the concept?
Marianne Harris and I worked on the concept together and it evolved constantly throughout the process. Filming was a pleasure. She's amazing and everyone should give her a go. X
I read at this point hundreds of songs have been written for Ashestoangels. Out of those hundreds how many have actually made it to the recording stage? Any chance we'll ever get a massive b-side release?
For a little while we had a bsides thing up on our bigcartel. I think it was 2.5 gig of songs. I've written far more since then so we might bring it back soon! It was set up so you paid what you thought was right. Hopefully the quantity of songs helped make up for the shady recording quality of some of the tunes haha.
I guess that about wraps it up. Thanks for taking the time to answer the questions. Do you have anything else you'd like to add?
Just like to thank all the people and bands we've worked with, and especially the ashes family. Without you we would be pointless. Xx
